Currently I backup to external drives but I'm looking into dropbox and similar tools.

One observation from reading the posts in this thread is the number of times that Calibre is mentioned ...... no other personal library management system has been mentioned so far (I don't think).

We really do as readers of ebooks have a lot to thank Mr Koval for methinks!

Another observation is how important most of us think that copying our e libraries is and the steps we take to ensure the ebooks are 'secure' in the event of x/y happening.

It's also interesting to note that a great bulk of us seem to be reasonably aware of various software packages and work out how to integrate them with our personal needs.

Interesting stuff, eh!

Yes, it's a potential worry, but I'm not really all that bothered. If I haven't read a book, then it should be on one of my readers, and if I have, I probably won't notice if it disappears. I rarely reread books.

If I did lose a book I'd legitimately purchased and still wanted to read, I'd have no moral qualms about downloading a pirate copy.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing, but it was a hassle because a couple of them weren't popular books.

That's assuming they even exist anywhere. Some of the books I lost at Alexlit simply don't exist anywhere else.

As soon as I buy a book it gets 'cleaned' and put into Calibre. There I download the metadata and add my tags, etc. My Calibre library is stored in Dropbox. I also backup to an external hard drive and flash drive every time I add a book.

Calibre + dropbox.

I didn't start doing the Calibre thing until nearly 2 years into my e-reading adventure, so I'm still catching up on archiving my older books. I've gotten my "top books" in but my collection is still spotty.

I... er... haven't backed up my books yet. But, once I get the time, I'm going to back them up to my two external hard drives, and either on my Skydrive account or my Dropbox account. (I use ADE more than Calibre for some reason.)

Calibre and Dropbox. My Dropbox folder also gets backed up with Carbonite, and every few months I image my entire hard drive onto a portable drive. So I have two online backups and one local backup. Not counting the actual Kindle device and Amazon's archive.

All of my ebooks are in Calibre, and are backed up on a separate hard drive and Carbonite. I learned my lesson after Fictionwise removed access to about a dozen books I had purchased and failed to download within a month. Now I download my ebooks immediately after purchase and store them in Calibre.

I keep all of my ebooks in Calibre after freeing them. I then copy the entire Calibre library folder structure to an external drive and my SkyDrive account.

They are also on my Kobo Touch and iPad.

Avalona do you mean Adobe Digital Editions?

Can you import your ebooks generally into it?

My taxes pay for the library. I rarely re-read, so there is no need to have a personal library beyond reference books.

I use Calibre mostly for the news feature.

Calibre library is backed up on an external hard drive, a flash drive, and a networked laptop, all using SyncToy. One can't be too paranoid, can they?
