I'm feeling that all arrows point to Kindle at this stage.
Not sure where abouts in Perth you will be but just to let you know there was an article in my local paper announcing the start of an Elibrary in the City of Swan which covers a large area North East of Perth. They are going Epub which I'm pleased about I don't think its quite online yet site here- http://cityofswan.wheelers.co/
Publisher list is a little small at the moment although I was pleased to see Poisened Pen and Allen & Unwin on it.

If you decide you want chiefly to read ebooks on an e-ink screen, then I'd recommend the Nook Simple Touch - $100 at Bestbuy, less on ebay. One disadvantage is it does not read mobi/prc ebooks that constitute a large part of US ebooks. And of course a Kindle doesn't allow epubs. If you're willing to try, this problem can be solved by rooting the NST. Pretty simple to do and there are many videos etc. showing how. Rooting doesn't destroy the original system; each can be booted to on desire. Then you can install various ereader apps such as fbreader, cool reader, and aldiko and read just about anything.

Why would you recommend to someone in Canada and Australia a device which is only available in the US? That doesn't seem like very good advice, I'm afraid.

I agree with Harry - don't get a Nook for Australia.

Because the op noted he was going to Chicago, and anyway, I imagine it is possible to purchase one via the internet regardless of where you live. Once purchased I would guess that B&N would repair it if required.

I checked with the B&N site; I was not aware how difficult they make having a Nook overseas! I assumed that once purchased in Chicago as the OP indicated he would soon visit, then all his problems would be over. Unfortunately, overseas owners cannot download B&N ebooks, and apparently the warranty does not apply. Of course there are many other sources of free ebooks available. I agree that the Nook is definitely not suitable for non-USA people.

Yup which is why most folks don't recommend Nooks overseas. If they handled the warranty better I think it would be ok. The Nook reads EPub so side loading is easy enough. But then you have the segregated memory so that most of the memory is set aside for BN books and you say screw it.

The reason is I currently live in Canada, but am moving to Australia in 8 months so want something that will work well here as well as over there (forcing out the Nook)

I'm also heading to Chicago in a few days so have the option to purchase the device in the states at somewhere like Bestbuy.

Which would you suggest? I had plans to buy Kindle Fire in Chicago (would love to also watch movies!) but realized you can only buy online + it would be crippled in Australia.

Perhaps the Sony Touch or Kobo Touch would be best?

I would like to spend under $250 and do not need 3G.

Thanks!

Kindle 4 or Kindle touch?

Oh I see you got the kindle touch. If you feel adventurous and want to read epub on the kindle the newest version of duokan system supports kindle touch. But I'd advise you to wait for a more stable release.

He is a she

Hmm I didn't think about warranty. I'm sure my Kindle Touch is covered in Canada (purchased from .ca with a Canadian cc) but not sure if it will be covered in Australia? Must check that out.

Received my Kindle yesterday, so light to read in bed! I didn't realize what a pain balancing a heavy book could be!
Purchased my first Kindle book (Swan Song, Robert McCammon) with ease and have read lots of samples too.
Love it!

Yes, Amazon's warranty is world-wide.

Well, I read all of answers to the OP. Very sensible and helpful. So I just ordered a Kindle Touch for myself. I have an original Kobo but it's a bit slow. Time to upgrade I thought.
So, although all of your replies were directed to the OP, I also thank you from Queensland Aus.
