I can't wear watches, and tend to have an odd effect on sensitive electronics sometimes, but I have no problem sleeping with my kindle by my bed - and in fact, I sleep with headphones on and my iPod with me, so I can listen to audiobooks without waking my husband.

I'm not that bad, Blossom, but if I'm at my computer for hours at a time (like today, being bored at home), it starts to develop some odd traits, like letters typing over each other. It doesn't do that when my husband uses it for equally hours at a time, so it must be something I do.

Perhaps a better choice would be to have (assuming you have them) your husband put it in a drawer and your teenager go into the room with a box just before bedtime and decide whether to take it out or leave it by flipping a coin. Don't see or talk to your teenager for any reason after this so that there won't be any subtle clues, then try to sleep. Next morning record your experiences, but don't share them. Then have your teenager go back into the room and either pretend to or actually replace the reader before you take it out. Do this every night for two weeks. I would bet big money that you'd find that there is NO correlation between your sleep and the presence or absence of the device. (the flaw with this approach being, of course, that a teenager is likely to bang pans at 3:00 am every time they leave the reader in the room. :-) ) |

I won't automatically dismiss it as auto-suggestion, but what makes you think it's the e-ink technology per se? It could be the battery or another component in the device...

I read my ereaders when I don't get to sleep fast enough. They, like the pbooks before them, help me to tire my eyes out so I can get some kinda rest. Otherwise, I'm lying there awake at night like I usely do when I don't have a thing to read. It could just be like the others say mental suggestion or something. But if you sleep better with them somewhere else, do so.

Three e-readers and an IPad next to my bed. The HUbby likes to fall asleep to the TV and I am able to fall asleep in about 10 minutes or so.
I do prefer to have the TV off but have never had a problem sleeping with any number of e-readers in the room with me. |

Exactly what kind of books do you keep on your ereaders?
I have to keep my copy of The Shining in the freezer. |

Are you reading with it just before you (try) to go to sleep?
Maybe what you are reading is to exciting for you. Try reading a nice boring story, like maybe Ulysses by James Joyce. |

Ulysses is likely to cause him to want to drinkor do drugs. I am reasonably certain those are the only two ways that you can understand that story.

And conversely, if I don't read in bed until I'm about to fall asleep, not only do I have trouble falling asleep, but my sleep is troubled and light for the whole night.
