It is right there at the end (winks)

I fail to see why I would want this on my e-reader. I can kind of see it on a phone and I can see it on a credit card but not my e-reader. Then again, I don't go book shopping in BM stores. If I am out and about with my e-reader, I have my phone and my credit card on me so why would I use the e-reader at 7-11 instead of my phone (smaller) or credit card (smaller and more commonly used to play for things).

Call me silly but I don't think it is that big of a deal.

I'm not sure of the benefit either. NFC technology is very useful - as I say, I have it on my credit card - but that, to me, is the place where it IS useful.

I don't either, at least not for me personally. I do know quite a few Nook owners though who go to B&N with their Nooks and take advantage of the Read In Store feature. Perhaps it will be useful to them?

I can see that it would be useful to those people and maybe those folks are the target of this but that is about it. Unless you get mugged at the airport and they get your wallet and cell phone but you still have your e-reader...

I'm the kind of person for who something like this could be useful.

I rarely leave the house without my Kindle slipped into the outside pocket of my bag, so it's within easy reach when I'm on the subway or waiting to cross the street. I also really enjoy browsing bookstores, but since I exclusively only read e-books these days, I never actually buy anything there.

If I could buy or add a book to my wishlist by just swiping the Kindle across the cover of a book in a bookstore, I can easily see that happening several times on each bookstore visit. Especially the wishlist part.

As it is, I tend to make a lot of mental notes about books that interest me, and then often forget half of them by the time I get home. Or I do remember them, but away from the allure of the bookstore I convince myself not to make a purchase.

I'm sure with this system I'd end up buying more books, which perhaps is not so good for my pocketbook, but good for the bookstore.

I see you have a smart phone. Why not use that to scan the bar code and add it to a wishlist, I'm sure there are apps that do that (I use one on my iPhone).

I use Pay-as-you-go with no data plan. Is there a way to do that without using data? I have been known to use my phone to take a picture of a book cover now and then, but was once told by store security not to take pictures, so I'm a bit wary of doing it.

But yeah, there's lots of ways to make notes of books right now without NFC. I was just pointing out that there's at least one customer who'd find it useful.

I guess you could swipe your reader in the B&M store, decide to purchase it, have it download from the publisher and the store earns a commision on the sale.

I think it would be great for Independent bookstores if they are able to sell DRM free versions for the different e-readers. I did like being able to go into a smaller store where the Staff had a clue and find new authors and new books. I found that Borders and BN were awful in that area and so I stopped going to bookstores.

If I was able to visit a local independent store and get some good recommendations from the staff and buy the e-book from them, that would be cool. But we are not quite there yet. Hopefully Tor's experiment will work and the DRM rules will change.

The conversion is just starting. There have been some experients over the last few years, but nothing particularly widespread. All four major credit card companies (Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express) are in the final stages of finalizing the standards for the EMV system. The standards include both chip & pin and chip & signature, and allow for NFC (but it isn't mandatory). How any of this will interact with automated machines like you're talking about isn't really known yet, because the standards are not quite written in stone yet, and the hardware developers are only just getting up to speed on the readers. But some kind of chip & something cards should start being widely issued by the end of this year, and the deadline for merchants to be able to accept them is absolutely no later than 2015.

Without using a chip, you can already use your credit card in automated machines. The "security" is to enter your zip code. You can do this at gas stations everywhere, and to buy a metrocard in NYC. You never have to sign a slip.

My husband's card has "Blink" on it and he can hold it up to the reader in a taxi to pay without having to swipe. I guess that is NFC?

I think the purpose of the NFC chip in a Nook or reader is being misconstrued. I doubt that Nook is going to utilize NFC chip for credit card purposes. I think the discussion has centered on credit cards because they are by far the most used (retail) use of NFC currently. However, NFC has a much broader application than credit cards. Besides the growing use of NFC in credit cards etc., NFC is widely used in warehouses as smart codes, to track packages, pallets, chipping containers, and merchandise. I would wager that this type of use for NFC currently exceeds the usage in credit cards, but for most of us credit cards is the only place we have seen NFC implemented up till now.

In fact, I don't think the Nook implementation would even involve credit cards (any more than the Nook involves credit cards currently). Currently, a Nook or other reader is tied to an online account, which is often tied to a credit card, enabling purchases from the reader. The "buy" button on the Nook is tied to the credit card that is associated with the B&N account. NFC would not necessarily change this.

NFC would be for easily entering information into the Nook. See a book on a bookshelf that you like - tap your Nook to the Book and that book ISBN will transfer to the Nook, the Nook will then use the wifi service to download the metadata for the book, showing book reviews etc, and of course, the BUY button that is already on the shopping page in the Nook.

That being said, my Android phone has a wallet application that uses the NFC in my phone to emulate the Mastercard Credit card that has an NFC chip. I'm sure that if/when a Nook has an NFC chip, and if it is Android (not windows 8?) then the wallet application could most likely be installed on a rooted Nook, and used as a credit card, but I don't think that will be the intended use by B&N. In fact, my phone is a Verizon phone, and the wallet app did not come installed. I had to install it afterwards.

The one nice thing about the wallet app, is that it is protected with a PIN. When I enter the PIN into my wallet app, it stays valid for 5 to 15 minutes (I can set the length). A credit card with NFC has no PIN. I don't know if there is a maximum value that can charged using NFC on a credit card, but that makes me a little nervous.

The value in NFC over a smartphone w/ camera, is that on my smartphone to use the scanner/barcode, I need to go through the following process:
- turn the screen on,
- unlock the phone,
- browse to the scanner app shortcut,
- wait for the scanner app to open,
- wait for it to initialize the camera,
- aim the camera at the barcode,
- wait for the camera to focus/adjust phone to focus on the barcode,
- wait for scanner app to download the barcode info from the interweb.

The process with the NFC (at least as it is on my phone):
- turn screen on
- tap back of phone to NFC chip.
(possibly wait for info to download from interwebs)

On my phone, the NFC automatically opens the app on my phone based on the type of NFC chip that I tap - if it is a credit card chip, it opens the Wallet app; if it is another smartphone w/ NFC it opens the sharing app to transfer information; if it is the NFC chip that is programmed to be by my bedside, then the program that sets my phone to night mode etc.

At any rate, the NFC chip in a nook/reader is cheaper, easier to use, and less work than a camera, and that is probably why B&N is working on that implementation.

your heading into the airport to catch a flight. you have your reader in hand. as you walk through the airport you see a poster advert for a new book. tap your Nook to the poster gets you reviews of this work, a free preview , reviews of the author's other works and the link to buy it.

thats just one use

Am I the only one who isn't thrilled by this notion? Am I the only one who doesn't like NFC chips in my credit card - much less my passport?

I admit, I have no rational motive for disliking this, only that it makes me very nervous and if I had NFC chips in my credit card, I'd probably get one of those wallets that blocks it - and I'd try to get a blocking case for my ereader if they all start coming with one.

(on the other hand, I resisted computer mice when they first came in too - and I still prefer command line or key-stroke commands over mice and menus.)
