Yes. Heck, they'll probably complain if they're priced above 99¢

Keep in mind the Fleming estate might have picked Amazon because other publishers were outbid; they might not be thrilled with skimpy royalties or with their precious intellectual property priced lower than a box of Kleenex. They'll also have to redo the covers and make sure they're pristinely formatted. If they make a big deal about it, that means marketing dollars. I.e. there's a lot of costs to recoup.

Of course Amazon might treat the ebooks like (yet another) loss leader and may not care about ticking off the estate once the ink is dry on the contracts. So who know how they'll price it.

The WSJ quotes an Amazon flack as saying the ebooks will "initially" only be available for Kindle, paperbacks will be available to other retailers. Anyone got a grain of salt handy?

Wonder what they mean by that? Initially as in they'll eventually sell them DRM free to allow other non-kindle owners to buy from Amazon? Sorry, I think I was dreaming of a DRM free world filled with bunnies, woken up now

Wish they would sell DRM free though and in at least kindle(mobi) and epub formats so non-kindle owners can buy the books. Get non-amazon customers to start shopping on Amazon and perhaps some will later convert to a kindle. Of course they take the risk that the reverse may occur too.

Amazon sells lots of their books for 7.99 don't they?

I'd try an introductory marketing offer - all 14 for :-

70.07

I wonder if they figured in their calculations that the original Bond books will be public domain in Canada in 2015?

(For me, James Bond novels conjure the image of unshaven people in hospital gowns reading mass-market paperbacks on institutional sofas while mumbling mathematical formulas to themselves, but for the rest of you, enjoy.)
I have a PhD in Political Science and I own all of the novels, except for the most recent one which has not received good reviews. They are good, escapist fun. They tend to be very different from the movies. The characters are well developed and grow throughout the series.

But I enjoy reading that type of thing. It is a nice break from more academic or serious reading.

As for the pricing, I would pay $5 for a Bond novel in e-book form. I won't pay $10. I have them in paper back. They are light and easy to re-read in that format if I want to. I would prefer to have them as an e-book.

Someone asked why Amazon does not sell in EPub. I think it would be brilliant if Amazon sold books in non-DRMed EPub. That would require that the Publishers allowed non-DRMed e-books be sold, but most do not. Amazon does not want to pay Adobe to use the Adobe DRM that is read on the EPub readers so Amazon does not sell DRMed EPub.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with them. Maybe a James Bond-themed marketing campaign for the Kindle? James Bond at the swimming pool reading a Kindle while nonchalantly shooting would-be assassins?

Bond books in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library? If the price is too high, you could get one free every month.

Use them to stick it to B&N? "Want to read a James Bond novel? You can't get it from B&N." (If B&N holds true to its promise not to carry Amazon books in its b&m stores.)

Various possibilities!

While checking over the books he wrote, I was shocked to learn that he wrote the kid's book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1964) and that the 1968 movie of the same name starring Dick Van Dyke, was produced by Bond film producer Albert Broccoli. And I always thought it was a Disney production.

Ah, but I guess it's actually from Veggi-Tales.

Nope.

The limitation isn't due to DRM, it's because Amazon wants exclusives. Even if they were DRM-free, you'd need to buy them through Amazon.

I think you misread what I said.

I know amazon want exclusives and will only sell the book through their own site. What I was questioning is whether the "initially available" part was alluding to them selling the books to non-kindle owners.

As in, a Sony/Kobo owner could sign up to amazon, buy the book from them and copy it to their device. Which could only be possible if they sold the books DRM free so that non-kindle owners could buy the mobi file and convert to their devices format (assuming they don't offer epub and the device doesn't support DRM free mobi).

I really hope that's the case even though I have my doubts.

I remember when Sony had a Bond Themed E-Reader. It came with a cover and everything.

While this is an entirely reasonable request, it is not going to happen.

Amazon will require Whispernet on any device or app that natively reads their files. They might ditch DRM one day, but it cannot imagine Kobo or Sony integrating Whispernet into their devices (due to attitudes on both sides).

If you want to read the Bond ebooks on your Sony or Kobo, your only option will be to buy it, download the file, crack the DRM and convert it, or pirate it.

Or you could have bought them when they were a Big 6 publication at silly high prices. These books have been available for a while now, hence the Sony Bond themed e-reader.

ETA: Changed Kindle to e-reader because I was an idiot
