Ah... great to know that what once seemed selfish was actually a personal sacrifice for the greater good

I bought 2 used 505's in the last 3.5 years. As long as the batteries continue to last, my wife and I are perfectly satisfied with them.

We just read fiction, so we don't even need wifi really.

That being said, I thought I accidently killed one of the readers last week and even though I was like "Oh crap!", inside I was secretly glad. Cause I now had a "legitimate" reason to look for another reader

But it started charging again this evening and is now right as rain. So no new reader in the next 2 months anyway...

I am a big sucker for new and useful gadgets, so when there is a new model of ereader out from Sony or Kobo, my wife skilfully manoeuvres me away from ereader displays lest I stumble, zombie like, arms outstretched towards said display, muttering...

"Must have new ereader...Must have new ereader..."

So no, I am more than happy with my ereaders at current

I've upgraded from a Sony PRS601 to a Kindle 3 last year because of the better screen and more reliable battery life (every once in a while the Sony would drain the battery in less than a day).

However, most often I replace one of my gadgets because of gadgetitis; not because the old one is broken or there's anything wrong with it but because I want a shiny new toy.

When the new Kindles were released I kept an eye on the reviews and thought the non-touch looked promising. I haven't ordered one because Amazon is rumoured to open a Benelux webstore this summer and I expect there will be less shipping costs when ordering with them. I might wait until the latest Kindle are released to see what they offer. When getting a new reader I would want at least the same quality screen or better because I love my KK's screen.

I won't get a new ereader until my current Kindle becomes unusable. And maybe not even then since I have two tablets that I can use to read ebooks.

But you see, they're not perfectly good so of course we have to buy new ones The K3 doesn't have a touch screen and the KT doesn't glow in the dark.

My desire to replace a particular e-reader is a cost/benefit ratio analysis. Does a reader have sufficient new capabilities at a low enough cost for me to justify replacing my current reader.

When I make that analysis in my head with my ipad 1, I didn't upgrade for ipad 2 and don't plan to for ipad 3.

When I made that analysis in my head for K4 non touch vs my K2, it was a no brainer. Smaller, lighter, pearl eink screen, my wife wanted the K2 for her and for 79 bucks! I upgraded.

I "replaced" my Sony PRS-505 with a Kindle 3 (Keyboard) when all the UK ebook shops stopped selling ebooks to people outside the UK around October 2010 and there weren't any others yet available that actually sold me anything in epub format. As Amazon seemed like the only option at the time and I didn't have too many epub books bought yet anyway, I went for a Kindle (although I realised I could de-DRM files).

The K3 did have an improved screen, which was a bonus and did matter to me, too.

I've been tempted by a number of new readers since, the Sony T1 more than any others (it's really the only touchscreen reader I've seriously considered, as it has page turn buttons - the Nook seems nice but I'm not American), but I've yet to give in. My K3 works beautifully and I don't think I need a new eInk reader until there's something with an even better screen out there.

I might be tempted by one of those new/rumoured front-lit ones once they're actually out, but as long as the Kindle Touch doesn't have page turn buttons, I don't think I'd want that even with good front-lighting. (I really loathe fingerprints and smudges on my Kindle screen. I know many people say they can't be seen at all on the matte eInk screens, but ... I can see them and they irritate me much more than the prints on my iPad or smartphone screen.)

I might buy a few latest generation eInk readers if it ever seemed like they were on their way out in favour of tablets / LCD readers. I really dislike reading on either my iPad or my phone, so I don't consider those viable options for me.

First e-reader I got was my Sony PRS-300. Lasted for a long time and I am quite happy with it. Wanted a little bigger one with touch screen and wifi and jumped on an Odyssey. That was a step backwards. Screen is darker than my 300, capacitive touch screen is a hit or miss (more often miss), the browser sucks ( having no browser is better than Odysseys), dictionary support is broken, even after updates. Going from 200 dpi on prs300 to 167 on Odyssey made text clarity worse.

Finally my 300 was upset for beeing put in storage, so it broke the Odyssey beyond repair (the usb port broke off). Not willing to sink any more money into it I declared the Odyssey dead. Took my prs300 out of storage, and it works just fine. The only thing wrong with it is the writing on the next page button and bookmark button are gone from using them too much.

Went to Walmart today and looked at a Nook ST. Ohhhh, must have, that is the best screen I ever seen on the display model. Had one in my cart, until I decided to have them open the package and let me look at the screen. Bahh, what a shame. Each and every one I looked at ( about 10) had this nice grey background compared to the almost perfectly white of the display model. Even put side by side in the display case with same lighting. So I put it back.

That cured me of wanting to replace my prs300. Only when it dies will I now check out a new reader.

I have several possible conditions for buying a new ebook reader. When either my reader (a Sony-505) or my wife's reader (a 650) dies.

When the battery life gets so bad that I will have to recharge it more than once a week while I am using it regularly (say 1-1.5 hours a day).

When a reader comes out with such compelling features at such a price I am unable to resist it.

Simple really, when my 650 stops working. No amount of extra 'features' on a new reader would make the 650 suddenly rubbish.
