Our public library allows users to borrow 12 books at a time, so I'd generally pick the first 8 books from my favourite genre, and then the remaining from random shelves - sometimes worked very well, sometimes not! Now that I tend to borrow mainly ebooks, I do the same - 2 from the preferred shelf, 1 random. I'm a bit less cavalier if I'm buying - it can be an expensive mistake! - and in that case, I tend to look at the reviews or take personal recommendations. Book clubs can be a good way of getting out of a reading rut.

Go to your bookseller of choice and click "buy" on whatever you see. The strategy works with physical bookstores too. There's no guarantee that you'll like what you bought, and it is a very expensive strategy.

Seriously, I get recommendations from other readers and filter according to how well I know their tastes.
