Well! All my collections are gone. And collections is greyed out. What happened??
I created a collection from menu, so collections is no longer greyed out. But all the collections I had (9) are gone. The 300 books are still there, as is the Calendar and Notes apps. Last edited by booklover6; 04-16-2012 at 02:10 PM. |

If you use the cover with metal hooks, it is probably shorting your Kindle. The hooked cover was causing spontaneous reboots every week. I returned my hooked cover on 12/15/2010 for a full refund and substituted a Marware soft cover.
It has never had a spontaneous reboot since then. |

No, definitely not a cover issue. I've never had this particular Kindle in a cover with hooks. My problems started in Dec, as I recall. I must have reached the magical archive number at that time.
So it's been 2 days (@43 hours) since I did this, and I have to say, the problem is totally solved. I even left wifi on for 24 hours. Not once has it rebooted or frozen, and that was even using it heavily to put the books on the device back into collections (after creating them) and downloading some blogs and news. I am very happy with my Kindle now! |

You could save your collections via Calibre, then set them back up after moving to the new account (again, via Calibre), using one of the add-ons. |

Wouldn't it be easier just to remove some items from your Kindle archive?

Booklover6, I'm happy that your problem seems to be solved!
I now have over 5,000 ebooks and active content archived at Amazon, with less than 30 of those loaded on my 3G Kindle 3. I have had two K3s. I connect to Amazon every day via 3G to check for new special offers. My devices have not had the spontaneous rebooting problem despite having so many books archived. By "reboot" do you mean a full reboot, where the boy under the tree appears with a progress bar displayed while the device comes back to life? Or are you talking about flickering? My device does flicker (sometimes several times) after connecting to Amazon or when it's disconnected from the computer during/after charging. I consider that normal behavior. |

Yes, a full boy-under-the-tree progress bar reboot. It would happen at random, within a few minutes to a few hours after connecting to Amazon. (Even after wifi was turned back off). I have had this happen to all 3 of my K3's....one of which Amazon replaced. (I'm not worried about the first one, as I don't connect it to wifi very often). Rather than have the 2nd one replaced I wanted to try this, and now, no rebooting. This is great, I'll continue to put freebies on the other account, and books I buy can go on the new account.

Thanks for explaining. I'm just trying to figure out why I haven't had the rebooting problem with either of my K3 Kindles, since it seems to be a widespread issue for others who have a large archive.
When I do my daily sync or download ebooks, I always connect via 3G, not wi-fi. The only time I use wi-fi is when I need to have a personal document delivered to the Kindle. I wonder if that may have anything to do with it. Oh well, just glad your problem is solved! |

At least one of the readers on my blog has had 8 or 9 replacements, all with the issue. I suspect the 19K books in his archive is likely the issue.
All the K3's on my account have this problem -- all of which connect via WiFi. I'll have to try letting mine connect via 3G sometime to see if that makes any difference (I know it won't send some docs that way, but it should otherwise perform most of the same steps, including attempting an archive sync). The good news is that once you turn off the WiFi, you only get (at most) one more reboot. Then, it's good until you turn on wireless again (even if it is days later). It is so easily reproduced, I don't know why Amazon hasn't set a tech on it (it isn't as though they can't create an account with a few thousand free books fairly easily and even without incurring any costs - heck, most of us with the problem would be happy to let a tech attach to our accounts, if it would help them). |

Karen, I'd be interested to know if you still have the problem when you sync using 3G since I do that every day and the device doesn't reboot. I turn 3G off as soon as it's finished syncing.
I don't need to download personal documents via wifi very often (maybe once every month or two), but I've never had the rebooting problem with either K3 after doing so. |

My KK3G (with special offers enabled) has rebooted several times in the last few weeks. I've had a large Amazon archive for a while now (currently around 6,000 ebooks), but haven't experienced this occasional rebooting problem until recently. I keep only 30 or so ebooks on the Kindle device. We're discussing this issue at another ebook forum, so I was just wondering if anyone here has solved the problem permanently. |

Yes, my Kindle lost connection to the local router for a few days (the router's fault) and the rebooting stopped. I finally logged it into the router again and the rebooting started again. Since those with small libraries don't have the issue, I don't think it is only related to checking for updates (which the wifi enabled ones generally only do on wifi), but there is definitely some code that runs only when on wifi that causes the problem. |

Thanks, Karen! That's very helpful information.
As I mentioned earlier, I have a large ebook collection of about 6,000. I connect via 3G almost exclusively, normally once a day to check for special offers. My Kindle Keyboard 3G has spontaneously rebooted only three or four times, but it rebooted the other day. I had connected via wifi a few days prior to retrieve a personal document from my Amazon archives, so now I'm wondering if that may have something to do with it. I haven't been reading very much lately, but I have been using the Kindle dictionary a lot because I'm proofreading my husband's latest book. I was using the dictionary when it rebooted last time; the Kindle was also running very slow right before that. I'll pay more attention to whether I've recently connected via wifi when/if it spontaneously reboots in the future. |
