Have you thought then of writing your OWN beginners tutorials, and donating them to the community (and maintaining them as calibre changes)?

Thanks. I have bookmarked it.

Does it tell what "Connect/Share" means, what it is used for and why it should be used?

I think sending the originator of this thread to Sigil in order to solve his problems, will just end up causing him greater frustration. I don't think I've ever read one Sigil thread that I understood.

When this site was just getting going and we were all trying to learn how to use Book Designer, folks like Harry T and Patricia spent a lot of time showing the rest of us how to use this program. But no one, as far as I know, has done with Sigil what Harry T did with Book Designer, which was to take a book from Project Gutenburg and show you step by step by step how he created a book. Until some of us have that basic knowledge, the technical discussion just goes over our heads.

As for Calibre, I use it for its most basic functions and leave the rest alone.

Have you RTFM'ed?

http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/gui.html#connect-share

Quote:
The Connect/Share action allows you to manually connect to a device or folder on your computer. It also allows you to set up you calibre library for access via a web browser or email.

The Connect/Share action has four variations, accessed by doing a right-click on the button.
  1. Connect to folder: Allows you to connect to any folder on your computer as though it were a device and use all the facilities calibre has for devices with that folder. Useful if your device cannot be supported by calibre but is available as a USB disk.
  2. Connect to iTunes: Allows you to connect to your iTunes books database as though it were a device. Once the books are sent to iTunes, you can use iTunes to make them available to your various iDevices. This is useful if you would rather not have calibre send books to your iDevice directly.
  3. Start Content Server: Starts calibre‘s built-in web server. When started, your calibre library will be accessible via a web browser from the Internet (if you choose). You can configure how the web server is accessed by setting preferences at Preferences->Sharing->Sharing over the net
  4. Setup email based sharing of books: Allows sharing of books and news feeds by email. After setting up email addresses for this option, calibre will send news updates and book updates to the entered email addresses. You can configure how calibre sends email by setting preferences at Preferences->Sharing->Sharing books by email. Once you have set up one or more email addresses, this menu entry will be replaced by menu entries to send books to the configured email addresses.

Programmers are not technical manual writers. Different skillset/interests. Always been that way, never will change. It has nothing to do with geniuses vs dummies.

when I started using Unix, the IT group gave me the 8 volumes of the reference guide (man pages in hard copy )
No user friendly GUI.
Plain old ASCII on a 'Glass Teletype' (ADM-3 or VT52)

I have stacks of manuals that allow me to write syntactically correct commands that I haven't a clue as to why or where in the code, I would ever use them (and never have in thousands of lines of coding in the database program they applied to).

Fortunately, most of Calibre and Sigil settings have help and pertain to the the preference area they are located in.

You are expected to have a basic understanding of book composition (how else would you know what needs to be changed).

There is no magic to getting a nice e-book (don't hit me Hitch ) ,
There is an Craft and Art to clean presentation.

The best tools in the world do little good, if you have neither Art nor Knowledge in their use.

IMHO, the only truly arcane user portion of Calibre is the Advanced template language (which only a few need/want to use).

One might ask why such a basic user guide would be necessary when you have this forum of friendly and knowledgeable people. Ask a question politely and you'll almost certainly get an answer.
