For me, the holy grail would be an 8 1/2 x 11'' full color reader so I can scan in all my comics (boxes and boxes of them) and bring them with me on the road. Total heaven.

I'll take one of those, too! For me, that would be worth a $500 price tag, easy.

Sadly, it's available, but at 3-4x that price, with poor battery life. (A tablet would do it.)

If we're wishing, I want a US Letter or A4 sized device with color, a reflective screen (like e ink), 300 dpi (including the color), at least 12 hours of battery life, AND a scanner built into the bottom so I can just set it on top of a page and it will pick it up. Heck, I'm wishing, so I'd also like it to be only 1cm thick, and while it needn't be flexible enough to roll up, it should be slightly flexible to fit into the spine of a book I want to scan a page from. This should make it more durable, as well.

Heck, might as well throw in cellular connectivity to the internet as well, and pen and voice input. Since I'm only wishing.

Rather surprisingly, there don't appear to actually be any A4-size Tablet PCs currently on the market. I thought there must be, but there aren't (or at least, none that I've found).

Maybe a "convertable"? They tend to be a bit larger.

Convertible tablet notebooks max out at 12.4 inches diagonal. Letter would have a 13.9 diagonal, A4 14.3. To cover the differing maximum dimensions, you'd likely want a 9 by 12 screen, which would give a 15 inch diagonal, though a 14.4 would technically manage it.

However the PDF would be readable on such a device. Full page mode would not be shrunk too much once the margins were ignored and in the off chance of a very detailed image landscape more is more than up to the task. Thus a table notebook IMHO is fine for A4 or letter even though technically it isn't quite a big as you point out.

I think keeping the margins in mind is a critical point. We don't need a display as big as a sheet of paper -- only as big as the area usually printed on the sheet of paper.

I would love color! Would you rather watch B&W TV or color?

Depends on the content.

Lets say I am interested only in the latest news.
I have 2 options when I choose how to watch the news.

Option No.1

B/W TV - No lag, pic is very crisp, excellent sound. Switching between programs is instantaneous.

Option no. 2
Colour TV - when you have fast moving scenes you see the trail of the sunject on TV, it lingers after lets say a car moved fast - ghosting.
If you get a static pic for longer than 20 second there is a risk of a permanent burn.

What do you choose?

Me? B/W TV.

The same logic applies to ebook reader.
I only need to read a nicely formated books. Magazins - No. Newspapers - No. eBooks - Yes.

For other needs I have super duper powerful PCs.

So far, I am aware about only 1 book I would like to read in colour on at least 9.7" book reader - The Da Vinci Code: The Illustrated Edition (Hardcover).

In other words I prefer a good quality B/W ebook reader to a lousy - laggy, slow, etc colour gadget.

Imagine this... a Charles Dickens novel typed in a multicolored font!

Seriously a book reader only needs to be black and white, really.
But a magazine reader would be a different beast wouldn't it.
For movies there is LCD and that is enough, there is no reason for it to be eink.

Until more magazines are available digitally, b&w (or multi gray) is fine. But once something like Smithsonian gets on board with a convenient digital format, color would be much more than just 'nice to have'. Even the digital Scientific American would be nice in color (and even nicer if they had an Iliad version properly sized).

"A Christmas Carol" was originally published with hand-coloured illustrations, and a two-colour title page . A nice copy of that original 1st edition will cost you around US$30,000-40,000 if you want one today!
