I have bad news about the boxed set "Bad Stacks":

This set has what appears to be a courier-styled font on all three books. It looks horrible and Nicholson needs to fix this product.

(By the way, he's the type of writer who will actually apologize for putting out a sub-standard looking product and, I might add, an Indie writer who cares about his readers. What am I saying? He doesn't indulge in endless spamming of sites and realizes that it is the reader from whom he earns his income.)

I happen to own all three of these books as individual titles, and they look fine.

So, go to Amazon and see if these three titles are still available for free download.

The boxed set is certainly readable - it just has an ugly, off-putting font.

Thank you for all the nice comments.

LET'S ADD SOMETHING NEW!

Let's open up this thread to OMNIBUS EDITIONS (more than one book as part of an ebook.)

1) If you find a FREE omnibus edition - post it here.

2) If you find a FREE boxed set - post it here.

3) If something's wrong with a product, then we have a responsibility to inform the author of their SHODDILY-FORMATTED PRODUCTS - whether it's someone who's hired a professional editor, or your dear old Aunt Betty-Sue who has a heart condition and is confined to her bed so she just HAS to write about murder and mayhem. But poking around outside is one very disgruntled reader who is also thinking.....murder. (Think of it as an updated "Sorry, Wrong Number.")

Nicholson (are you listening?), you can use that for a new short story. -- I'll expect it tomorrow. Properly formatted, of course!

Whatever you do: HAVE FUN!

Don

I'd have to admit that I read a lot of these threads on the basis of them showing up in the RSS feed, which doesn't reflect additional replies, so I'd rather see new threads for newly free omnibuses instead of this being an ongoing thread.

I don't see a problem with posting about an omnibus or boxed set in an ongoing thread. It would save time for someone who is interested in such a collection I would think.

Thanks for that, Dr.! I am constantly learning and experimenting, and I work for YOU, the reader, so I am always happy to adjust things. In fact, I am currently re-branding many things so I welcome any advice and tips. Box sets are trickier than other images to make look decent in a thumbnail, and I am actually redoing these soon to make them BIG and sharpen them up, so I will consider any advice and feedback and help!

I am not a pro designer or formatter by any means, just a scruffy hillbilly doing my thing! However, I do have standards as high or higher than anything in traditional publishing and I vow to live up to that.

Thanks for sharing the news about my work! (unless you are talking about the font style inside the book? In which case, that is wholly accidental--I would never do that! It must be some default code in there--thanks for that as well!)

When discussing ebooks, there really is no difference between an omnibus and a "boxed set," right? Technically speaking, they would all be omnibus editions (collected into one volume--or one digital file) rather than a boxed set which is several separate volumes in one cardboard case. Thoughts?

(too pedantic? If we can't discuss this sort of pedantry on Mobilereads, well then where can we?)

In the boxed set version, the fonts look like courier - the old typewriter font.

In the individually priced books, the fonts look fine.

OT: I enjoy your work and I'm currently reading The Indie Journey: Secrets to Writing Success. I recommend this title to all writers and would-be writers.

Nicholson doesn't play games in this book: He tells it the way it is based upon his own experiences and belief system, and he doesn't hold anything back. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You're welcome Dr. Drb. I know what you mean. I have some 35 books now that are either totally Scott Nicholson's work or that he was a contributor to.

I found this in the KDP freebie backlist round-up for 2012-02-02 thread and it looks interesting

An omnibus edition of three novels of horror by author Ian Woodhead
Spores: Everyone over the age of 40 has been wiped out by an unidentified fungal plague. Only the young remain. The survivors leave their shelters and emerge into a world blanketed with clouds of drifting spores.
They believe that the worst is over, now is the time to start re-building. They have yet to encounter the abominations, altered by the spores. They thought the plague was the end.
The plague is just the beginning.

Shades of Green: Like maggots eager for flesh, the pale tendrils pushed up through the woodland soil. The alien vine penetrated flora and fauna, its intimate caress altering everything at a genetic level.
Deep underground, the vast machine grew as it tunneled through the earth, slowly bearing towards the small town of Holburn.
The Aliens arrived millions of years ago. The invasion has just begun.

Third Sight: Driving its serrated talons through their hot skin fills it with unbelievable pleasure. Only the immense waves of life energy detonating from its chosen watcher can come close to the almost orgasmic experience of deleting their physical form from this realm.
Adrian Winters is unaware that close to his home, a newborn demon has chosen him to be the watcher. Very soon, his loving family and all his friends are about to become food for the demon.

ULTIMATE THRILLER BOX SET

Teleread has bought my attention to a set with a modest name ;-)
ULTIMATE THRILLER BOX SET
at Kindle store
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Thril.../dp/B0073J0XVC - NON-affiliate link (I hope ;-) (there is no ref= in the link) )
It contains five books:
Origin by J.A. Konrath
Desert Places by Blake Crouch
Darkness on the Edge of Town by J. Carson Black
Watch Me Die by Lee Goldberg
Disintegration by Scott Nicholson

The set is DRM free, so after downloading it to Kindle For PC and simple conversion you can read it on any reader of your choice.

Please note that Scott Nicholson is our fellow Mobilereader.

Get it while it lasts.

One more thing:
I haven't read it yet, but it has pretty nice rating once you disregard those two 1-star ratings posted by people that couldn't figure out how to download the book.
