I love Somerville & Ross's books, but they might not appeal to the average 'Murican. |

Rhubarb by H. Allen Smith. Not in ebooks. Read it many years ago in paperback and remember I laughed a lot. The movie that was made from the book is okay but not great.

Two series I will mention are:
The Myth Adventures Series by Robert Asprin. I had the first book in my too be read pile for months, then one afternoon decided to read it. It turned out to be one of the funniest books I'd read in a long time. "A Series Of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket. Not a laugh-out-loud type of series, but still very funny. |

I chuckle when reading lots of books. I'm currently reading an Alan Bradley mystery and I always chuckle at Flavia DeLuce.
The one author that always makes me actually laugh out loud is Douglas Coupland. In particular, Jpod and All Families Are Psychotic. Two brilliant books that have something to say, but are also very funny. |

The only way stand up comedies/movies work is because the details that you notice add to the whole attempt to tickle your funny bone. In books, you only have the description and the rest is up to your imagination. |

I totally agree with this article. But I would add one more item: comedy is so subjective, it's hard to even go by the recommendations of others.
The author of this Cracked article really likes Douglas Adams (so do I!), but also loved Moore's Lamb, which I don't think even caused me to crack a smile while reading. Same thing with A Confederacy of Dunces, the author of this piece loved it but I found it full of bland slapstick and fart jokes that I would have rolled my eyes at in junior high. This isn't because Lamb and A Confederacy of Dunces are unfunny (and everyone who likes them is wrong), they're just not the type of funny that I find funny. |
