All this K4 talk has me wanting a K4NT. Even though Amazon recently replaced my K3 I still worry. I've been getting out a lot more lately, so the K3 is getting out more too. The K4NT would be a nice addition for "out of the house" stuff, while the K3 could live safely on my nightstand.

Or maybe I just have gadget lust. I know I don't want a Touch. I manage my Collections through calibre and I am NOT giving that up, nor am I giving up my page turn buttons. And before anyone asks, yes, I've tried it and I prefer non-touch.

Either way, buying one is not really an option right now, but you've certainly got me thinking about it for down the road.

I would have loved some of the other features but I was not willing to sacrifice Buttons. (Maybe I am swipe challenged?)

If so, you're not alone. I am completely dysfunctional when it comes to touch screens. My phone has multi-touch capabilities but I can't manage it - I can just barely handle the basic tap. I initially thought it was a device-specific issue until I tried several other types of touch screen devices - including ereaders - and discovered that the problem is actually me. Capacitive, resistive, IR... doesn't matter what type of screen, I totally fail at using them. It's become something of a joke among my friends.

My first K3 started to slow down drastically as my device collection neared 1,000 books. Searches and other functions became almost impossible because it took so long (many minutes)! There were no books stuck in indexing, and rebooting didn't solve the problem.

When I had that K3 for a year, I had it replaced due to a screen defect. Because of the slow response times with the first K3, I decided to store all books in the cloud and keep only a few books on the new Kindle. This device works great. It's nice to be able to search, highlight, etc., again.

I didn't notice a performance hit on my K3 until I got to around 800-900 books. It didn't slow down horribly until I got to over 1600. Right now I keep between 500 & 600 on it most of the time and it works fine. I would imagine that the type (size and complexity) of the books matters as much as the number.

I have something like 400 books on my K3 and DXG and I don't have any issues. The actual number of books is larger then that because I have 15 complete collections of authors works so probably closer to 500 or so books on my device.

While I found the X-ray feature (and how much is it really used? How many books have it?) enticing, I too am not willing to give up buttons. I've got a Sony 350, so I know touch screens, but I just don't like them as much as I do buttons.

do you have trouble wearing a wind-up watch, too? because your above is so me... I dunno if it's because I always have cold hands or what, but touch screens just don't like me.

I do have cold hands most of the time, but over the last several years I've lost some flexibility in my hands that only effects certain types of movement. For example, I can still do hardware repairs in tight spaces with tiny tools without much trouble, but I can no longer play guitar much at all.

It doesn't seem to be CTS-related, but I don't know what it is. I do know that as long as I leave the guitar alone, it doesn't seem to be getting any worse. As far as touch screens, the best way I can explain it is that for anything other than a tap, things don't work as expected because my fingers aren't moving exactly the way I'd like them to.

I have probably about 1000 on my 1st gen nook, about 700 of them in the active B&N library (the others are sideloaded) and it has problems refreshing the library, takes a long time and sometimes fails to refresh when requested, necessitating a reboot. Sometimes after a reboot it falsely reports that the library is empty, and I have to try to refresh/reboot again to get to my items. I actually get kind of distressed when I only have a few minutes to read and B&N decides to randomly reload the library without me requesting it. I see that the kindle doesn't do it quite the same way, which makes me happy.

Yeah, that was a pain to try, but it was very easy to manage them on Calibre, a few minutes, reboot the K4NT, and I was back in business.

I sync my collections so I'll make my collections on my K3 and then sync them to the K4. You can do the same thing with K4PC if you want.

OK, at 6 days post-purchase I am delighted at the battery life on this baby! Still at about 75%!

My nook barely lasts 2 days.

Congrats on your new K4. I got my K3 just a bit short of a year ago (mid march) and I use it very often. You can't beat an ereader for convenience. I'm thinking of getting a KF one of these days but I will still use my K3 fairly often.
