I just threw mine in the dustbin. Too much like hard work to try and resell them.

I've heard it said that if you love reading, you'll love a Kindle (or other e-reader), but if you love books, you won't. I think that's pretty accurate. From my days working for a book dealer, I know that there are book lovers, and there are readers, and the two groups do not completely overlap.

Tried giving mine to the local library - they weren't interested.

who's got any time for reading when they are busy shooting people in games or downloading loads of movies and zapping through them in the meantime?

I can't throw a book in the trash... how would I be able to do physical harm like shredding? Books get recycled somewhere anywhere in this house. Never trashed.

As a re-reader an eReader is a perfect way to keep old favorites with me.

When I say "throw away", let me clarify that I do of course mean in the recycling bin.

I don't know where you are in the country, but the Cottage Bookshop in Penn is well worth a look. My parents treat it essentially as a for-fee library, they take in a couple of boxes of books they have finished with to sell, and find a couple more boxes of second hand books to buy. Good selection, and very good prices.

I'm not DRM advocate by any means but I am in the process of cleansing my bookshelves. Can't believe how heavy a trash bag gets once you have 40 books in it. Not shredding though, jut bringing it to recycling.

I sold a few in a house sale, and took the bulk of them to Goodwill. I still have several boxes of non-fiction, but almost all the fiction is gone except for my Dad's westerns. Those are keepsakes rather than books to be read.

The only "Penn" I can find is in Bucks - is that the one you mean? Rather a long way away from me, I'm afraid; I'm in the NW of England.

These days I'm in the process of replacing my large paper library of mainly detective fiction with eBooks, and I'm selling the papebacks (most of which are in mint condition) on Amazon. If you can reasonably describe the condition of a book as "New", they tend to sell very well. And with Amazon, you just put a book up for sale and forget about it. Sooner or later someone will want it.

In the real world, most people simply keep their books after reading them and then later, give away or throw away their books after they get tired of carting them around. This is one reason why the general public simply doesn't care about not having a "right" to resell ebooks.
The general public doesn't have a right to resell their mobile games or apps, either- which hasn't prevented them downloading them at a rate of two billion per month.

And the iTunes music store has been pretty successful, despite there being no right there to resell, or transfer ownership of, purchased music.

I think in general though people expect to listen to music again and again, while most people would only read most books once.
