And I too agree Amazon did not give enough thought to the kindles actually being able to run with a significant amount of books on it. This is my one pet peeve with them, they tell you you can have thousands of books but it actually cannot handle thousands of books.

Thanks for the helpful advice, Nyn. I'll give that a try.

If that works, an added benefit will be to prevent me from losing hours in perfectionistic tinkering if I were rebuilding my library from scratch (correcting metadata for Kindle Store books; e-mailing non-Kindle Store books to my Personal Documents; re-organizing all my Collections...sounds fun but my life is far too busy to lose myself in recreational-OCD-land).

Oh, sorry. The award is for the least amount of collections.

But you do get some Karma for effort.

I don't keep many items on my Kindle (only the book I'm currently reading, a few reference books, and apps), so I have only a few collections on the device itself.

I use free Kindle for PC software to categorize all my books. I have over 2,800 ebooks, so I need a lot of collections. Many books are in multiple collections. Here's my list:

Autobiography, Memoirs & Retrospective
Business & Tech
Calendars
Classic Literature
Cooking, Food & Home
Dictionaries & Grammar
Exercise
Fiction
Finances & Taxes
Golf
History & Historical Fiction
Horror
Humor
Kindle
Legal & Police
Literary Fiction
Magazines
Medical Drama
Miscellaneous
Mystery & Detective
Naughty
News Feeds
Psychic & Paranormal
Publishing & Writing
Romance
Romantic Comedy
Science & Medical
SciFi & Fantasy
Short Stories & Novellas
Social Issues
Spiritual, Inspiration & Growth
Survival & Preparedness
Thriller & Suspense
Travel
Video Content
Women's Fiction

Same here, though I wish there was a way to separate books that do not belong to any collections.

Since I read a ton of series - my Kindle always stays arranged by Collections. Each series is it's on Collection. I use the Calibre Kindle Collections plug-in and by using a custom column which allows me to have Author - Series Name it makes it easier to view.

For those books not in a Series, they are arranged by the author's name with the total of books under that author (not in a series).

I have not used To Be Read, Read or anything like that because they only books on my Kindle are those that are unread. Once read, I delete them and if I ever want to read it again, I can re-load using Calibre.

The great thing about Collections is that it works the way "you" want it to work. I have to say a huge THANK YOU to Meme for his work on the Kindle Collections plug-in. I love it and it has made organizing my Collections so much easier. I love seeing the other ways people organize.

I don't have a consistent scheme, which is a bit embarrassing since I work in a library. My defense is that I catalog music, not books.

Anyway, my collections are:

Biography
Chesterton
Fantasy & Sci Fi
Game Manuals
History
Literature (couldn't think of anything better at the time)
Miscellaneous
The Way

I basically have:

Info: Course Materials
Info: Transit Schedules
Projects: Public Domain Proofreading
Source: Paid Purchases
Source: Promotional Offerings
Status: Currently in Progress
Status: Read in Full
Trial: Samples

This is in part because there aren't any decent Collections-only organizers on the Mac which will let me edit stuff easily, so I basically set these things up manually and prefer to limit the amount of flicking and clicking I do to arrange things (I don't use Calibre).

Snap! Nice and simple just like me...er....my collection.

At the moment I just have the one collection, finished books. I have no need for any others, although a "freebie" collection might be good, then I can prioritise far more easily. I do like to get me a few freebies now and then and I have a few I've downloaded from the Kindle store.

My collections are:
Fiction
Nonfiction
Memoirs
Unread fiction
Unread nonfiction
Reference
Samples, fiction
Samples, nonfiction

Takes up exactly 1 page, so my currently reading book is at the top of page 2. Of course behind that is a bunch of stuff I haven't put in order yet, so I actually have 6 pages on my kindle.

That's the main reason I like to keep my collection list as short as possible. I like opening my Kindle and seeing the current books I'm reading listed on that first page, right beneath my four collections. If nested folders were allowed, my collections list would be considerably longer.
