I chose "on 24/7" as that is my habit with my primary computer. This machine is put into a "sleep" mode which powers down all accessories (via my intelligent UPS) every night and during the day when I'm out of the house.

My laptop is used much less frequently and it is turned off when not in use or put to "sleep" for short interruptions (meals, ...). My wife's notebook and deskop are also used less frequently and are turned off when not in use.

RE: wannabee's story.

WOW! This is quite a story! If I were up to it, I'd "have my people talk to your people" and get a contract to novelise this. Things being what they are [me mostly bedridden and only up to checking my email 3-4 times a week] I'll just have to pass on the option to leech onto your saga --and advise you to contact an agent.

Seriously, I have read WAY flimsier books than what could be made of this. And "Made for TV Movies"?? This could put you into phase 1 of "wannabee's retirement fund."

Thanks for taking the effort to fill me/us in.

I believe you. And I think you ought to look into making some money off this story. Seriously. Folks who know me know I joke around [probably too much] but I'm not joking when I say this scenario has legs! As R.A.H once quipped "When opporknockity tunes, you'd better be in tune with it."

Thanks again, and please accept my full load of conveyable karma.

Haha . . . Who knows what goes on in a small town?

I could add the gay couple that ran the gymnasium in the building and the woman and her daughter who purchased the cafe next door to the kebab shop and settled the deal on September 10 just hours before her new business went up in ashes.

Then there's the insurance companies and their assessors. Now they're a fun bunch to deal with. A few of the businesses in the building were under insured.

Spoiler:
Insurance works this way. If you think your stuff is worth $100,000 and insure it for the same and have a devastating incident that requires the complete replacement of the insured and it is determined that to replace the goods is actually $200,000 you are deemed to be under insured by 50%.
Hence your your $100,000 policy is now only worth 50% of the sum insured which is $50,000. This came as a shock to many of the business owners

Of course all these characters are fictitious and any resemblance to those living or dead is pure coincidence.

Meanwhile: back at the ranch. Last night on A Current Affair (Channel 9) was the story of the lady whose house burnt down because a Sony TV set caught fire. She later found out that that model had been recalled for that very reason. Fast forward ten years later and the same lady receives a letter from Sony recalling her latest TV purchase stating possible overheating and fire as the reason.
When she contacted Sony and asked to be refunded and no longer wished to have the risk of the fire hazard in her house they brushed her off until the TV broadcaster got involved. Then there was all manner of apologies and well wishes.

I just have my laptop, and I leave it on all day, just in sleep mode so I can wake it up quickly. I turn it off at night.

Having been a PC tech in a former life, that was usually my advice too; but there are many caveats. Variables range from amount of daily usage to weather conditions to the cost of electricity to value of your data to …

I guess what I’m trying to say is one size doesn’t fit all; your results may vary!
