I keep things until they break.
I would prefer to fix everything, but nowadays there are a lot of items which cost too much to have repaired. My car is a 1987 Toyota Camry with 278,000 miles on it. What I have come to appreciate about my jetBook Lite is the user-replaceable battery. I suspect that for many eBook readers, the battery will be the first thing to go, and it will cost too much to replace it. My jetBook Lite runs on flashlight batteries, so replacement is not a problem. The page turns are instantaneous. I am very happy with the reflective TFT screen. So I wonder, what would be involved with an upgrade? |

I've been feeling the urge to upgrade for a while now, 'cause shiny new toys are cool, but after checking out what is available at the moment (features, look/feel, and price) I couldn't find anything significantly better than what I already use.
So I will be continuing with my little Sony for a while longer Last edited by Kiwiscott; 01-21-2012 at 11:03 PM. |

I still love my 505 dearly and will keep and use it for as long as possible, likewise the 650 - both do exactly what I want and need. Besides, whilst a ménage à trois is manageable, another digital reader could be a crowd.

I'm sticking with my 505 till it dies. Though I sometimes wish, I could correct my fanfic books on the reader, I don't see any reason to buy a new one, when my current one works fine and I have tons of space available with my two sd card slots and I have things I would rather spend my hard earned money on.
I originally had a 500 was happy with that but when I heard Sony was going to epubs with no word on if the 500 would get an update to be able to read them, and Sony giving $100 towards the 505 when you turned in the 500, I went for it (on the last day of trade). |

I plan on keeping my Sony until it dies. I did upgrade to the Sony from my Nook classic when the Sony was half price at a closing Borders. I admit that I originally wanted the Sony but brought the Nook at the time because it was cheaper. Now that I have my Sony and am also more conscious about the waste that is produced when we constantly upgrade gadgets, I plan on keeping the Sony until it can't work anymore.

I will probably upgrade my KK if a new screen comes out, but otherwise, no.

I upgraded from the Nook Classic to the Nook Touch because I felt the touch screen was worth it. I'm not sure what advances will make me want to get a new ereader. Perhaps 300 DPI and color e-ink or equivalent.

I generally don't upgrade things until I have to, because as much as I like NEW SHINY, I hate relearning things and setting stuff up from scratch.
In the case of eReaders, I love my 950 so much that I bought a new 350 on eBay when the T1s were announced. LITTLE 950! *snuggle* |

To a great extent, my issue is more finding something that does what I need it to. Skipping past the various pc based or palm based readers, the first purpose built e-reader that I got was the Sony PRS-500. That worked well enough, but it simply didn't handle a lot of books well. I tried the Kindle, more for access to the amazon e-books than anything else. I found that difficult to use, so I gave it to my mother. When the Sony PRS-505 came out, I upgraded to it. It processed books significantly faster than the PRS-500. I still have and use my 505. I tried the nook, but didn't see any advantage, so I gave that to my sister. When the iPad came out, I got that and that became my primary ebook reader. I like the size and once iBook came out with categories, I was at least able to semi-organize my books. I didn't get the iPad 2 when it came out, but will likely get the iPad 3 for the speed increase.

I was in Walmart yesterday and walked past the e-readers they had on display there. The e-ink display of my 500 has started to grey, so the new ones looked so shiny and bright, I almost bought a new one right there. But I'll probably hold strong and keep this until the battery refuses to charge anymore or (heaven forbid) Kovid decides to stop supporting the updated 500 in Calibre.

None of the above...I look for the device that meets my needs/wants.
Example...the new Kindles came out including the touch...I wasn't interested and ordered the older K3 keyboard model as an upgrade from my K1. |

I am currently reading on a Pocketbook 902. It is almost the perfect device. If they added a Pearl screen I would have to fork over the cash to upgrade to the new version.

I voted the upgrade when there is a serious advance option.... I'm sorely tempted by the touch screen ereaders, but will probably take forever to decide which one I'd actually buy, then just keep my Kindle 3 anyway. If it still works just fine, there's no really good reason to upgrade, it's not like the latest generation are much of an advance (if any)!

I'm tempted by new toys, so have to at least go see them. However, in terms of k3 - I find it and the lighted bookcover such a perfect fit for me, that my temptation is actually to buy a second set to save for when these wear out.
