theres always the Dune series by Frank Herbert. imo God Emperor of Dune is one of the best books ever written. Frank Herbert wrote the 6 original novels but at risk of sounding like a heretic, only the first 3 are really worth reading.

While reading your post, I was in such agreement that I caught myself nodding my head at the screen. Although I didn't mind Chapterhouse Dune when I was young, but I think the idea of sexified Bene Gesserit ladies from beyond the stars may have addled my teenage brain.
