We already have plenty of devices that do that. The Jinke readers (Hanvon & Astak), Netronix Pocketbooks, Azbooka, and Bookeen--pretty much all of them that aren't tied to a specific bookstore--are designed to read ePub, Mobi, PDF (some better than others), txt, and sometimes a couple of other formats like palmDOC .pdb and .fb2.

Most of them support Adobe's DRM, because Amazon refuses to allow anyone to support mobi DRM and any other DRM format, and there are more DRM'd pdfs & epubs than mobi books away from Amazon. (Support for Kindle DRM is not available outside of Amazon.)

I don't think the idea is crazy, but I also can't answer the question as is. I supposed I would like it if Amazon's Kindle supported the epub standard, even if it didn't support B&N's drm. I guess my issue is that I don't want my ereader to just be a sales front for a store, any store. I currently buy ebooks from a variety of places, remove DRM and convert to epub if needed so I already have a "universal" device for my needs.

Hmmm. After thinking it over, my computer is already the universal device. I can download ebooks via calibre from a variety of stores and then convert to epub. So my e-ink device should be more like my PC!

At more than one B&N I've seen booksellers rooting the Nook for the customer. I've also seen third party cell phone vendors list rooting ebook readers and tablets as part of their expanded services of rooting devices for customers.

The poll was would you BUY a device.
I'd suggest that the people who said a rooted Nook is such a device, were indicating that they had already bought such a device. IOW, your "hypothetical universal ebook reader" is something that is currently available, and used by people.

As I live in the UK, Barnes and Noble have no interest in selling to me. Therefore unless I move to the US such a device would be useless to Me.
