You and others are correct. I have been confusing the two countries Sweden and Switzerland. Perhaps it is because they are both Nordic, start with "S" and produce beautiful natural blondes. |

Actually, the Nordic countries are the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. Switzerland is mountainous and thus pretty cold (except for the Italian speaking part), but natural blondes are few and far between (as far as I have noticed). No big deal, anyway. Perhaps time for you to have a drink?

Just a hint:
Sweden: Elks, Astrid Lindgren, Stieg Larsson, blondes, Ingmar Bergman, Volvo, Ikea, Abba, Baltic coastline Switzerland: Mountains, alphorns, Heidi, banks, chocolate, yodeling, alpine skiing, watches (contrary to the quip in the Third Man not cuckoo clocks, they are German) For further information I suggest to look at a map. I would also suggest to look at rankings of global competitiveness, that regularly put Switzerland and Sweden on top: Switzerland, Singapore and Sweden top the Global Competitiveness Report ranking http://www.weforum.org/news/us-compe...re-closing-gap Not too bad for fuddy-duddy, welfare "Old Europe", eh? |

Here, in handy visual comic-strip format, is the very best explanation of the distinction between the officially Nordic and Scandinavian countries and their associated territories I have ever seen: How the North Works
Everything else can be assumed to be non-Nordic/Scandinavian. ETA: It does omit Svalbard and the Jan Mayen Islands, but those are unlikely to come up in everyday conversation in most places. Well, apparently there's this in-comic joke going around about Finland being a hard-drinking depressive knife-wielding homicidal maniac because his national dish looks like something plopped on a plate*.
And also because Åland wanted to leave him to join Sweden†. * I have never seen actual pictures of mämmi, so I have no idea if there really is any resemblance or not. Perhaps one of our Finnish members can weigh in on the matter. † I should warn for large-font swearing on that comic, in case anyone is looking over your shoulder at work. First off.
I stand corrected by many on Sweden and Switzerland. I wish it was the first time I have been corrected, but alas it is not, and it won't be the last either. ![]() How does one lose his bearings? Where does the "horizon" go? Here is the glamorous slant: From Bono: "I know a girl who's like the sea.' The sea and the sky become the same colour and you lose the horizon line as it disappears into infinity." As for me, on this subject: First a few notes: I like watches, have had quite a few, have traded them as well, though now I have sold off, passed down, and reduced my stock drastically for financial and downsizing purposes, as I end the major part of my working life. I now use modern Casio and Timex and have a couple of my father's old Bulovas and a Seiko. As for as collectables I have only a few old primitive antiques that I picked up along the way, along with a some compasses, many with no recognizable name, but they are fun to look at and show to the grand kids. I think that is why I have kept them as I downsize. Little kids love old pocket watches that chime. Such bright little eyes that can study a watch movement from an inch or two away. on Swedish Watch Companies: http://www.watcheroo.com/swedish-watches.php 1 Arlanch 2 Axcent 3 DILLIGAF 4 Efva Attling 5 Epoch 6 Ezteem 7 GANT 8 GUL 9 Gustafsson & Sjögren 10 Poseidon 11 SAS 12 Sjöö Sandström 13 Time Studio 14 TRIWA From Wikipedia---------Scandinavia and Nordic ----------------- The three monarchies (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) that compose Scandinavia according to the strictest, and most common, definition The possible extended usage: Iceland and the Faroe Islands on account of their populations being largely descended from Scandinavians, Finland on account of its historical association with Sweden and its Scandinavian minority. The Nordic countries make up a region in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic which consists of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and their associated territories, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland. In English, Scandinavia is sometimes used as a synonym for the Nordic countries (but excluding Greenland), despite the fact that that word is most strictly defined to refer only to Denmark, Norway and Sweden.[1]------------------------------------------------------- So Scandinavia and Nordic more or less rhythm in commonality but how did I mix up Switzerland and Sweden besides losing my horizon? I think it is because the Swiss Swatch Watch Company has its watch movements in watches everywhere including Swedish watches and I had recently read an article about the Swatch watch movement supply controversy and how it would affect many, many watch companies that did not make their own movements. Anyway, a new year is here and my head is feeling better already. And now if my team can continue its winning ways, or rather if both my teams can continue their winning ways since my favorite has already beaten my second favorite, I will really feel good. I hope everyone will have a Happy New Year. ![]() |

Sweden is certainly showing up on my charts now. The $3 charge each time a eBook is checked out is insane. It would be cheaper to just send lending library trucks out loaded with copies of the paper books. As for beautiful blondes I was thinking of Elin Nordegren, Tiger Woods' ex-wife, and many other beautiful Swedish models and movie Stars over the years. |

I could be wrong, but I believe the $3 lending charge was negotiated by the Swedish publishing industry in order to curtail e-book lending. The libraries figured that people would borrow an e-book around four times a year totaling $12 on a yearly basis. There is nothing similar to Overdrive in Sweden so libraries can only lend with automatic expiration. The truth is that most e-Book reaers are probably imported on an individual basis, hence both libraries and publishing industry was grossly uninformed about the actual amount of available reader.

It was possible to lend ebooks on libraries in sweden long before there was any e-readers available in sweden (and it might be before any real ereaders was available at all, not exact sure when it started but it started with PDF and also some audiobooks and stuff like that). The fee is from that time and therefore it is so high. It will prob be lowered quite dramatically.
