What surprises me about B&N is that they behave AS IF they were #1. They don't seem to realize that they aren't the big gun anymore, and their business strategy needs to change accordingly. BTW, I didn't like the original nook...didn't feel right in my hand, was too heavy. Love the keyboard Kindle. Different strokes. |

Yeah, their hissy fit over the DC graphic novels on FIRE comes to mind. Throwing their (welter) weight as if they were top dog and DC wasn't a part of TimeWarner. Personally, I think they shouldn't have called it the Nook *Tablet* if they weren't ready to play by android tablet rules. The Nook Color was marketed as a Nook Reader-plus so buyers knew not to expect openness. Last edited by fjtorres; 12-22-2011 at 11:49 AM. |

![]() Totally agree that B&N, perplexingly, seems to think they are #1. Very odd. ![]() |

Still on the last version with my NT regardless that I've had WiFi on more than I usually do.

I was thinking of replacing my NC with an NT, but the requirement for a signed bootloader made it a complete no-go for me.

Exactly. I was ready to buy one of these turkeys until I did some research. "Tablet" is a joke.

B&N must have some hothead in a top position. They just keep making reactionary moves that ostracize a large percentage of their customer base. Customer loyalty is a large factor when you depend on continued e-book purchase to make up for low hardware costs. Many of the moves (the DC Comics issue, now the NT lockdown) don't even really affect me personally, but they sure don't encourage me to patronize their business.

It's funny that BN once suggested they would open nooks up to developers...only to go the opposite direction and lock it all down.

I was really surprised when I found that out a few weeks ago; Google is very low-key on the process for installing unapproved apps. |

Very likely an edict came down from on-high to stop the rooting etc.

(I mean, I realize YOU know this. Ranting.) Developers basically have to root their devices. That's part of development. You don't just code something in a sandbox, load it to the App Store and THEN do your testing. That's Not How It Works. So making an announcement that you want to curry favor with developers, and making a forum to do so, and THEN realizing that "oh, crap, they're rooting their devices!" is fail fail fail. Similarly, when you go around saying that you're going to provide identical reading experiences to people, or that you're going to use a format that can be read on all devices, or some such nonsense. PEOPLE! Talk to your engineers before you say this stuff. Not hard! You think we're just here for our sexy good looks? We're more than a pretty face. |
