I guess he meant, that it is possible to setup a script that automates removing the drm and converting to mobi, so it is essentially just one command you enter - thus one step for the user.

I don't have a large number of LIT e-books, but they all have jpeg images (and mobigen.exe -jpeg maintains image sizes). Where can I find a (non-DRM) LIT with GIFs larger than 64KB?

The lack of a lit2mobi command illustrates that there is much more 3rd party software available for LRF than for MOBI. It would be relatively easy to produce a lit2mobi command for Windows, but the need for wine to run mobigen.exe under OSX and Linux would make this harder to do in a cross platform manner.

We also shouldn't assume that the conversion has to be to Mobipocket format to read on the Gen3 because it can also read HTML. You can do a LIT to HTML conversion as easy as a LIT to LRF. If the goal is to create a library without DRM I would argue that you'd also want it in an open standard format rather then proprietary. Hopefully ePub in the future and this whole discussion is irrelevant.

I have a simple script that calls clit and then fix the language tag in the opf file if needed and then calls mobigen. When I get a file where images need to be rescaled or converted I will add this to the script.

I agree, and there is already an oeb2epub that can be combined with clit to give a lit2epub command.

The gen3 does not link between multiple HTML. So you'd either be able to read the ToC or the book without a ToC. Of course, if the book converted to multiple HTML then you'd only get a part at a tme with no ToC.

To be honest, I have not seen any LIT converted to html not have JPG images. Maybe I'll try adding a GIF to a word doc and making a LIT to see what I get back.

And that is where the 505 shines. Libprs500 works for Linux and OS X as well as Windows. So you can run it natively without having to run Wine or Parallels.
