I was wondering about what other promos he did, so that's good to know... again, his fame would mean more eyeballs on each promo, but he did use various advertisement streams and covered a lot of ground.

Or a lack of actual talent? Not trying to offend anyone here, but there are a lot of free books on indie bookstores/sites that are free for good reason...

If Louis CK's video had been horrible, either with regards to production value or if it hadn't been funny, it wouldn't have sold very well, since word of mouth cuts both ways. It's vital to have a good product if you want to sell a lot of it, regardless of what business model you decide to use, but perhaps even more if you rely on the internet and the people on it to market it for you.

Sure it works, Apple's music store has been DRM free for some time.

He's now accumulated over $1 million in sales. He gave all his staff bonuses and donated a huge chunk to charity.

i don't say this very often in life but he's a good guy. its odd to see someone who says "i have enough money".

if you poke around on youtube you can find his views on business and he just makes a lot of sense. he doesn't identify himself with any side of the political spectrum either, he is just who he is.

heres Louis CK on Consumers and Capitalism-(be warned, he swears....a lot lol)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N95IMKRkcBw

"Louis CK on the Opie and Anthony Show discussing how it is our own short-sightedness as consumers that is bringing down the quality of our products, services, and way of life because they no longer care about their neighbors and their neighbors' success. The clip ends with Louis remarking that the 2nd place competitor always wins in the end because he is more vicious."

Yeah, he's not wrong.

I've said myself, on many occasions, that corporations couldn't get away with half the things they do, if it wasn't for consumers letting them get away with it by buying their products.

Louis blames consumers for shopping at Walmart because "they have to save 13 cents off that mop." We consumers allowed the big box stores to overrun the mom and pop stores, and it's cost us our neighborhood individuality and uniqueness.

Books are in the same boat: The more we buy from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, the more we buy the same small set of books that everyone buys, and less of the local and independent books written by our friends and neighbors. We let the corporations convince us that only their products are worth buying, that independents can't possibly compete with them.

And we all know how wrong that is.

Too true...not enough people supporting the local shops, restaurants and local entertainment...often very good and more appreciative for both sides.....

The small mom and pop stores can't afford to buy product that people want anymore. You think one of those can sell electronics like Best Buy? I agree, though, when possible support mom and pop stores, but the distributors and manufacturers charging insane markups for their products goes a long way to driving small businesses out of competition I'm sure.

I just bought my first ever stand-up video because I like the way he's doing business.

Where notoriety is concerned, it cuts both ways; Louis CK is getting a bigger publicity boost than Joe Blow, and had more seed capital to put into producing and distributing his own work, but he's also a bigger target for illicit distribution. Rather than go to war with his audience in a DRM arms race, he opted to deal fairly with us and simply ask us to return the favor.
