If I had two different Kindles end up with a broken screen, I would make sure to buy the Extended Warranty from Square Trade that covers the electronics and accidental damage.

If I had two different Kindles end up with a broken screen, and like the OP, hadn't dropped it or accidently damaged the screen in some way, I would look at buying something other than a Kindle.

Not sure what Amazon have admitted in this case (in general or specific to this one Kindle?), but trading standards are quite right that if it is an admitted manufacturing defect, then it's not really on to expect the customer to pay anything towards a replacement even if it is out of warranty (although perhaps not if it's something like 5 years old).

That they weren't prepared to go to ligation over a £40 issue... regardless of whether they were in the right or in the wrong.

Exactly.

I can't even imagine an individual wanting to bicker over that amount, especially if the item was owned over a year already.

my kindle has a small spot (~4mmx5mm) of "broken" eink (i.e. its a black/gray blob that doesn't change when I refresh the page)

visual/tactile inspection, don't seem to be broken on the surface ( its like 1cm from the bottom of the screen)...

though I am careless with the device, dropped it a few times, cracks on the side and scratches on the back....

tl;dr, screen can still crack internally

What you have is a broken "capsule" on the screen. That's a totally different issue from the usual fractured substrate. Your problem is a screen fault, and is covered by warranty.

Right. Keep whining to someone who might possibly do something besides sympathize with you. We all realize that a warranty period is just advisory and one should expect warranty service for the rest of their life. And, whether the device, which is not in my experience very delicate, was abused or not is immaterial.

Good-bye

I managed to do this once by trying to remove some debris from the Kindle's screen with a finger nail, so it may still be user error.
