For the first time, I have started reading a text-only book (as opposed to training books with lots of illustrations) on my iPad. The book is Robert Alter's translation of the five books of Moses, and it has a structure with lots of notes at the end of each chapter which are not linked within the text, so I need to do a lot of back-and-forth between the chapter's text and the notes. I couldn't see doing this with slow e-ink.

I converted the book to mobi format and am reading it in the Kindle app, because that's where I do my other reading (training books, plus Le Monde), and because I like this app. I tried a few other, ePub compatible apps, but the result didn't seem worth the effort of changing apps for.

I use my iPad for reading academic literature and it's absolutely excellent for that. It has some great apps for annotation. However, for 'fun' books I use my e-ink readers - they are so light weight and I really like the e-ink screens.

I don't find that I get any undue eyestrain when reading on the iPad - and I do some quite long sessions (transatlantic flights). The key for me is to turn down the brightness so there's not too much contrast.

The iPad may be not be best device for reading narrative fiction. However, it is without doubt the most versatile device for reading digital content.
If you want to read ebooks from stores, there are apps for that ( I have 5 of them).
If you want to read library ebooks, there's an app for that.
If you want to read magazine content, there are apps for that.
If you want to read comics, there are apps for that.
If you want to read childen's books, there are apps for that.
And if you want to read esoteric stuff like poetry, there is even an app for that.
For reading technical manuals and textbooks in PDF , the iPad may even be technically the best choice.

I used to do all my reading on a kindle and loved it for fiction. Non fiction with graphs, maps etc was a very frustrating experience. Since getting the iPad I've not used the kindle at all, I love the versatility of having my books, music, movies etc all sitting in my lap. I don't have any problem with tired eyes but do find the size a bit off putting after being used to the small kindle but realistically it's no bulkier than a large hardback.

I got my iPad the day they became available almost 2 years ago and have read 40-ish novels since. Love it!

But, I don't hold it to read. I have a cover that doubles as a stand. That means no reading while reclined in a deck chair on the cruise, but the glare pretty much rules that out anyway. It's not as versatile as a dead tree book, but in the right setting it is excellent.

I seem to be the same as many others here: I use the iPad 2 for comics and magazines, and a dedicated eInk reader for regular books. I'm perfectly happy with that. The demands of each format are different enough that one device won't be ideal for everything.

Exactly, I've given up on my kindle since my OH got me an ipad for my birthday last year in June, and since then I've read 72 books on it. As far as weight goes, the thing is less than a k., If people can't manage to hold that up for long, then unless you have some physical condition that stops you from being able to lift, you should get some kettlebells or something and strengthen your arms.

Obviously you don't often read standing in a crowded train with only one hand to hold your book.

What does that have to do with people saying its too heavy to read when they are at home?

Did anybody say that? The thread is about reading. Not everybody reads at home. Weight can be a factor, or it can be inconsequential, depending on where and how you read. Which is why some people mind it, and some don't.

. I'm talking specifically about people who find the iPad too heavy to hold for reading. Now if you want to pull people reading it one handed on a crowded train out of your pocket then that's fine but that's a strawman
