I've used phonebooks and indices in non-fiction works for names at times, and sometimes I've taken names from folk songs. I've also used names from movies and TV shows and mixed and matched them. I have a lot of fun with names and making up stories to go with names and vice versa.

Lisa Gardner has a sweepstakes on her website http://lisagardner.com/interact called "Kill a Friend, Maim a Buddy". The name nominated in the winning entry gets written into her next book and killed or maimed.

I notice in her "Writers' Toolbox" section, she gives advice for aspiring writers also.
