SONY makes a big deal about how you can use the T1 to download books directly, without the need for a PC. Yet, you need a PC to make it work in first place. And, if you live outside of North America, you need a PC to authorize the device as well. That, by itself, should not be the case. And no-one should have to jump through hoops to get anything to work in the first place. In general, I am starting to feel frustrated about how much 'work' is involved in having a functional ebook reader. Read forums, install patches, deal with bugs, contact CS, download PRS+... it's all starting to feel like a lot of work, which a customer should not have to deal with. We are talking about a device that displays text, for heaven's sake, it's 2011... Why can't anyone get it right? And yes, I am not claiming SONY is alone here - the Kindle Touch is clearly a disappointing - to me, and to many others - device as well. Really - the more I think about it - the more I hope Apple decides to enter the ebook reader market soon. Because this feels like MP3 players pre-Apple. I know they won't. But I can dream, can't I? |

... and now that all the big companies are in a race-to-the-bottom with prices there will probably never be a perfect reader out of the box. It costs money to hire talented firmware testers. The current way appears to be to let the user community do the latter stages.

That is simply not true. I didn't have any issues with mine even without the update. Of course I might be part of a small minority, but since people with problems are far more likely to say so on a forum than people that don't have any problems I really don't think so.

JSWolf you have to be the least helpful poster I've come across in my many years of using forums.
Firstly, I use Linux because there are significant advantages for me to do so, not the least of which is the cost. I would not tell you to run Linux and I don't expect you (or Sony for that matter) to tell me I should run Windows. Secondly, I'm not posting here because I "prefer to complain" but because the Sony book reader that I bought only a few days ago does not work and I thought the forum might be able to help me. But you seem to think otherwise. Thirdly, you need to buy a clue about Linux my friend. Your diatribe about lack of software is completely wrong and only highlights your ignorance. You do know the Sony PRS-T1 is running Linux don't you.. In any case, I did find a windows machine (no it wasn't that hard) and I did install the firmware update but it did not fix the problem. So the fact that I run Linux had nothing to do with the problem, it's all in your head. It looks like I got a lemon, shit happens.. I have a Kindle as well BTW, but Amazon do not rely on my running windows to update the firmware, it is done directly from the device as you would expect any network connected device to so. The reason I bought a Sony this time if you want to know, is because Amazon seem to think Australians shouldn't own the new Kindle model until they're ready to sell them to us and so Screw You Amazon! Many thanks to the other posters who had some good general advice about my problem. I really appreciate your comments and your help! The reader has been returned to a service centre and I'm waiting for them to fix it. I'll let you all know the results when I get it back. Thanks |

![]() I wouldn't go so far as to say "least helpful", but the chap certainly has strong opinions about certain things (Windows, Covers, ...) - I've had to refrain several times from commenting! For future reference, if you haven't seen it yet, TerryAJ, there's a way to perform a firmware upgrade without needing Windows or OsX, although you do still need a computer: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/PRST1_Firmware_Upgrade Hope you get your reader back soon - it really isn't too bad when it's all working! |
