Liz Williams:
- Banner of Souls - Empire of Bones http://www.amazon.com/Banner-Souls-L.../dp/0553586769 Both are pretty good with alien characters in main roles. Last edited by BlackVoid; 12-13-2011 at 03:49 AM. |

I'm currently reading A Deepness in the Sky, and his aliens can be fascinating (not to mention the fact that his human cultures are pretty good too). |

I read "Black on Black" by K.D. Wentworth the other day. Very good - an alien raised by humans finally finds others of his species.

I'll echo Left Hand of Darkness and the Uplift Series.
The best I can think of with the mix you're looking for is Perdido Street Station by China Meiville. |

I think it's been mentioned, but I just started the Ringworld audiobook, and I'm really enjoying the alien characters so far.

I would recommend any of Hal Clements' books.
Mission of Gravity Needle Through the eye of a Needle Iceworld He does a great job of making interesting aliens. |

To add to this, I'd recommend Asimov's entire Elij Bailey series (see this Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Asimov#Mysteries).
A novel I'd recommend is "Virtual Girl" by Amy Thomson. The lead character is an A.I. created as a companion for her inventor. |

Try Agent of Vega by James H. Schmitz, from Baen Free Library
http://www.webscription.net/s-89-jam...rerFilterID=0& amongst others you can read about the alien, Zamm, who hates baddies with a passion that is a real joy in this politically correct time. |

I'd recommend Neal Asher's Polity novels for interesting non-human characters. The main character is human, an agent of a government entirely made up of AIs. The AIs in the books direct much of the action and are by far more interesting than most of Asher's human characters. Gridlinked is the first book in that series if you're interested.
