That sample is silly. There is no reason to have to add any extra space after an italic. If there is, it means the software used to display the italic is buggy and should be fixed.

Yes, that is the point I was trying to make.

But if the OP is using his 505, then it's not an issue with that as I know italics don't have a problem and 11/22/63 has embedded fonts so I know it's not using simulated italics.

Someone in the Kobo forum is also having issues with italics and spacing - seems to be a wider issue then just this book:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=160080

It might be useful for the OP to comment there, as Kobo staff do lurk in that forum.

OP has already said that the book displays the same problem in ADE, so it's likely a file problem and not a device problem. I was positing a theory before he shared that information.

Amazon changed the file size....it now matches what I downloaded. If there hadn't have been such a big difference, I'd never have noticed. I'm really enjoying the book especially now that I know I have the whole thing.

I finally gave up and purchased the book from Amazon, and I have had no formatting errors with the Kindle edition.

Now hopefully Kobo will refund my purchase without a hassle.

I've purchased around 125 books from Kobo, and have had no other formatting problems of this nature (although admittedly I've not yet read many of the books purchased). I wouldn't have minded an occasional problem, but it happened with every italicized word, of which there are many.

It's still bugging me too, and after paying full price for the book (wasn't able to use any discount codes) I really expect there not to be glitches like this. SK loves italics, so it's worse than you'd expect from any other book.

Lee- I received an email from Kobobooks this morning, acknowledging the problem and stating they would provide me a store credit as I had requested a refund. They indicated they would inform the publisher about the problems but did not know when a corrected version would be available.

Hopefully you'll be able get a refund also. Good luck!

Why purchase from Amazon? It just means you won't be able to read it on your 505. The conversion from Mobi to ePub doesn't come out all that well. We've already said that other ePub editions don't have the problem with the italics. So what you are now doing is limiting yourself to what devices you can read this on.

JSWolf - I haven't updated my device list for a while, as my Sony PRS-505 died some time ago. I now have two Kindle 3 devices instead, as well as various Kindle apps. So for now at least, Amazon was the best choice.

It is generally a good idea to let the publisher know when something like this occurs, even if it is a device issue and not a publisher's formating problem. The publisher might have additional avenues inwhich to report such things to the device mfg'er. Also the publisher might be able to adjust the formating of future content if it looks like the mfg'er is unable or unwilling to offer a durable solution. Just a thought, I know that I would want to know regarding any of my titles.

Randy - I agree, and I did notify the publisher about the formatting problems. Of course, I haven't heard anything back and don't really expect to, but at least they're aware of the problem. Kobo has also indicated they will "work closely" with the publisher to try to resolve this problem.

I was thinking of this while reading 11/22/63 and I may have a reason why there is a problem. It might not be a problem with the actual eBook. If you were reading it with a Kobo reader, then you may have encountered the font embedding bug that Kobo (stupidly) refuses to fix even those it's been pointed out to them. The ePub of 11/22/63 uses a lot of embedded fonts. The bug with Kobo readers is that they have ADE setup to ignore font-family lines in the body style in the CSS. So the font uses as the main body font in 11/22/63 is not displaying. There could be a problem with the default font and italics.

If this is the case, then it's a flaw in Kobo readers and Kobo should fix this. But they won't since it's been an outstanding bug (font embedding) since the original reader.

Most ePub turn on the main body font for embedded fonts in the body CSS style. This is nothing unusual. For Kobo to ignore this is just wrong and can ruin the way the ePub is supposed to look.
