I've only had my 505 since Sunday but I've gone through 1100 pages and I still have plenty of battery life on mine (only one bar gone). I'm so used to having to charge my Axim every day that for me this is a dream, but based on these comments I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Interesting battery life reports. I think I'm averaging around 275 pages a day and the indicator drops one bar after about three days of this. I get all freaked out when I see that and plug 'er in for an hour or two.

yes, reading off a SD Card, I usually keep a fair large amount of reference material on the SD card
which I use occasionally. Wish it were easier to transfer books back/forth between internal memory/sd card and being able to preserve the book marks(currently that requires syncing the book into the computer and then move it to the other memory store).

I will try reading main memory only and see how it improves. Out of curiosity, is the memory drain only from having a SD card book loaded? If I only read off the internal memory but still have the SD card plugged in, would it make a differece?

I'd like the answer to that, too. I bought my Sony Reader PRS-505 in Nov. and I've never gotten more than 3 or 4 days of use without recharging. I have the AC charger, but I don't want to read with that. The Reader is supposed to be portable...not tied to a wall outlet.

I have a 1 GB memory card and read off that. I deleted the internal contents. Is that part of the problem?

There is a very small constant power drain from an SD card simply from having it plugged in. The power usage increases somewhat when you read from the card, and increases a lot if you write to it.

Mine definately drains while simply flicking the switch... which apparently is standby and not off.

I've got in the habit now of menu,0,5,3,mark whenever I set it down.

I originally put all of my Sony Connect classics on my Memory Stick. This seems to be drawing more power than my SD card for some reason. I read from my SD exclusively the first week and the battery was doing great. I'm halfway through The Jungle Book on my memory stick and i've lost a bar.

Rudyard Kipling books are known to cause battery issues

So that's where I've been going wrong all this time

I've just got mine and 3 days and 1100 pages later it's gone... a lot sooner than I expected with no warning from the battery indicator. No SD cards used and I turned it off (not standby) between uses. More than a little disappointed but I'll give it another go with a couple more charges and see how we go before I go back to Waterstones .

My PRS-505 has been giving consistently better performance since the July firmware update; probably about 30% more I would estimate. So in standby mode I can get 4 weeks instead of 3 before; during which time I read about 1000 pages.

I've noticed the same thing since the July update.

I used to completely shutdown my 505 to conserve power. Since the update, I've been able to just use the power button without any noticeable lose in power.

Have made it about 1/3 of the way through Count of Monte Cristo (which is much longer than I was expecting ) and have seen my power drop to two bars. This is with just using normal shut down, and with no charge in 3 weeks.

My reader was bought in Canada end of July, and the battery is still fairly new. I haven't counted the actual number of pages, but managed to read 5 novels on one charge on my recent trip, around 400-450 pages each, and a few pdf-manuals, and demoing the devide to lots of people, so maybe 3000-3500 pages on one charge during 2 weeks before it shut off. The low battery warning was very late though, it warned and then went to the 'stop' after around 30 pages.

Huzzah, it looks like it was a first charge issue! Second charge, just shy of 3 weeks with approx 200 pages a day read.
