Well, I had a new thing this morning. First, no apparent issues re the total battery discharge. I'll see how battery performance is today.

This morning I took the Vox off the charger and powered it up. Everything looks fine. I opened a Kobo book and read it a bit, then closed the Kobo app. I shut off the wifi and put the Vox down and left it to go do something else. Walked by later and saw the Vox had gone into sleep mode. I have it set to do so after 30 minutes. A bit later than that, I saw the lock screen, so the Vox had awakened itself. From the lock screen, it was unresponsive. I held the power button down. The Vox turned off and then restarted. I did not hold it down to the count of "10-one-thousand".

I'm not crazy about it coming out of sleep mode by itself and then freezing "on".

Mine still comes out of sleep on its own...seems to happen when it goes into sleep on its own (rather than you putting it into sleep mode) . Mine did not freeze when I hit the unlock button...but I was in zinio prior to it sleeping on its own, not the kobo library...

I've been turning my wifi off and waiting a couple of seconds before tapping the power button to put the Vox to sleep. It has consistently resumed from sleep ever since, even after being asleep several hours (the Vox, not me, lol ). This is promising.

As for freezing on the lock screen, I've had that before the patch occasionally but not since (so far...).

I'll give that a try...although, if memory serves, I already had been turning off the wifi before putting it into sleep mode. But maybe not waiting a bit between the 2 steps, I don't know.

I've had no problems either before or after the update. Mine is rooted..When I am setting it aside for the night I put it into airplane mode and
then power off. No issues turning it back on the next morning. My only problem has been with Dolphin browser.

OK, tried that, and I just got the same behavior I was getting intermittently before the update: no response, no lights, black screen when I tried to wake it up. I don't think it's done that since the update. Since the update, I've been able to perform one or two taps and then the Vox freezes. So a reversion to pre update behavior at this point would be a bit of an improvement, at least if the poor behavior only happened intermittently rather than every...single...time the Vox tries to wake up.

The day of the update, things were going just fine, no problems with the wake/sleep thing after the update. I was happy, I figured the problem was solved. That night I powered down the Vox and plugged it into the charger. Powered up the following day, and this is what I've had ever since.

There's no guarantee it would be better and it would be a waste of time to set it all up again but a factory reset would get you back to the previous version... or would it? Which version do you get on initial boot now, the 111117 version or the previous one?

Hello,
I have problems like 49Kat. As I was pretty tired of this situation, I've try to find out why this was happening. After many tries and errors (about 10 times) I find out a way to make my Vox freeze each time.

These freeze have nothing to do with the apps that I use or open as I only have to use the airplane mode to make it happen.

1. power on
2. put it in airplane mode first time (all the others time, I was already in airplane mode)
3. wait about 1 minute or more without doing anything
4. press to button to put it on sleep
5. I let it sleep about 2 minutes
6. press the button to wake it
7. unlock
8. slide from one screen to another, on the last screen slide on reverse
9. In about 2-5 screens slide, my vox will freeze (this will be the same if I open an apps, this will freeze). It doesn't seem like a fixed time period. On time, it even freeze during the unlock procedure. Other times, took about 6 screens slide.

I was not always constant with my 2 minutes sleep period and sometime was vox wasn't even power on (black screen no light: my trick is to plug it for only a moment and then I will power up again). Even 1 time, I've seen to Vox to wake up by itself for only about 2 second before returning to sleep.

Info for the programmer:

First, I remove all my widget as I was wrongly thinking that was the cause of the problem (I had airplane mode on/off by beautiful widget).

Running apps:
settings 12mb
system update 2.1 mb
globe2go epaper 3.5mb
kobo update check 2.1mb
android keyboard 5mb

This doesn't happen when I'm on Wifi.
My Vox is rooted
If you need tester, I will gladly help you. Just send me a private messages.

49kat can you follow my instructions and see if your Vox will also freeze?

bye,
Isa

I don't know now if doing a factory reset would get the previous version or not. Would the Vox update itself to the most current version during setup? I suspect it would because otherwise why would the date one purchased their Vox matter regarding whether or not one needed the pre-update patch?

I'm not sure if these are the numbers you are looking for or not, but when I look in settings, the build number I have CAN.20111117 followed by a bunch of other numbers, which I won't post here since I don't know if the next 2 sets of numbers are unique to each person's individual device or not. (I'm new to Android devices. I've been a M$ girl all my cyber-life. )

I tested about 7 sleeps today (where I forced the sleep and where I let it sleep itself). It did not wake when I pushed the power button ONE time out of the 7 times (so needed to do a hard reset - 10s power button push; click; press power again and then it came back on).

There was ONE thing unique about that time: I let it sleep itself - and I was reading a book in my Kobo library prior to that. All other times I let it sleep itself, I was reading a book in Overdrive or a mag in zinio....

Zazou, my Vox freezes when it comes out of sleep mode regardless of what I do. Wifi on, wifi off, airplane mode on, airplane mode off, turn wifi off and leave for a minute before putting in sleep mode, manually using sleep mode, letting it sleep by itself...or if it's a day of the week ending in the letter 'y', LOL!

Before the firmware update, the freezing was intermittent. After the firmware update it was fine for that day, but ever since the Vox was shut down and charged overnight after the firmware update, the Vox consistently freezes each and every time I bring it out of sleep mode. I've run it without the anti-malware, I tried uninstalling it. (I'm using Lookout, trial version, and it started it's final 7 day countdown the same day this problem with the Vox started.) I had been using a photo from the Gallery for wallpaper, so I changed back to one of the Kobo wallpapers. Same thing. Nothing stops this. On one occasion, I actually managed a few taps, I was starting a book and feeling hopeful, and then it froze, but other than that one time, the freeze is one of the following:

--screen stays black, no response
--unlock screen comes on and I can unlock, but Vox is unresponsive after that
--can unlock and tap on one thing, like perhaps the apps menu, and then Vox is unresponsive after that

At this point, I think about all I can do is not let it go into sleep mode and if I'm going to not be using it for an extended period (like longer than 1/2 an hour, because 30 minutes is the longest time you can prevent sleep), I'll just completely shut it off. This might be kinder than constantly doing hard resets. At least until the next firmware update.

I have no desire to root or hack, I just want to enjoy the product. Which I do. I would just enjoy it a lot more if this wasn't happening.

P.S. I've reinstalled Lookout and my gallery picture as wallpaper, changing these didn't make a difference anyway.

49Kat,

Do you have the the Advanced WIFI lock installed?

I am wondering if the new firmware and that app might be fighting each other?

As with 49kat, I been hit by the the dreaded Wake-From-Sleep issue on my Vox. After many, many hours of testing and reconfiguration I have not been able to eliminate the problem.

Env: Latest patch installed. Never rooted. Ext SD card presence has no effect.

Set screen off to 15 sec.
Install any app.
Move that app to the SD Card.
Allow screen off and sleep. Wait at least 3 mins.
Wake from sleep.

Results: Shortly after waking I get an error stating the SD card was unexpectedly dismounted. A little grey triangle with an exclamation point in it appears at the top left corner of the screen. The Vox screen then becomes unresponsive. The Vox become unresponsive in under 60 sec. The On/Off button is unresponsive to the usual single press to turn on and off the Vox. Once the screen goes off the Vox appears completely dead and unresponsive.

Recovery: I can cause the Vox to 'cold restart' by the usual press and hold of the on off button. Once this state is reached I must always cold restart it.

Removing the 'apps' from the SD card does not eliminate wake from sleep death.

I have performed multiple factory restores (Vol+ and Start button). This does not result in returning the Vox to original (no sleep of death) behavior.

Do the initial configuration steps. Make no changes to the screen time outs or any other changes to the behavior. Do not add any apps, factory stock content. Let the Kobo reading app download all the content, new and old. Let the Vox sleep, wait 3 mins. No response from the screen, I sometimes have the 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen light up, but the screen stays black.

WiFi state is irrelevant.

My Vox is now unusable.

I really hope they figure out what's going on and fix it.

Before and After the update, I had massive problems with my little kobo. It keeps crashing. I got it half-working at one point, after I did a reset (VOL UP and Power) before I did the latest update, but I don't want to have to wipe everything out again. The "freezing" problems seem to be worse or the same. We use it mostly at night when reading children stories, but this is getting really frustrating. I'm almost at the point of taking it back and getting a different ereader tablet and side-loading the Kobo app.
