The big mystery remains, whether I "acquired" them legally or illegally. Quite frankly, I do not know myself. Since I am an avid reader of sorts, a friend of mine simply burnt a DVDR with these .mobi extensioned ebooks for my birthday.
It would have been socially awkward and ungrateful of me interrogating him regarding the acquisition of these ebooks.
I totally agree with the whole morality issue surrounding intellectual property.
What would you do if you were faced with a similar situation? confront your friend? report him to authorities? toss the DVDR in the lake along with your beloved Kindle Touch (Sorry to trivialize this). Welcome all thoughts and discussions.

If you genuinely totally agree with the issue surrounding intellectual property then the answer would be quite clear. You wouldn't even have to ask.

If YOU didn't buy them and they're not freely available classics books or Gutenburgs or the like, then you toss the CD, delete them from your reader & your computer and tell your friend - thanks but no thanks.

It's as simple as that.

The pros & cons for both sides for the whole file/app/music/ebook sharing thing(not always legal or right, but it's never stealing!) is that it's little more complicated than some people(and IRAA) make it to be.

There're many reasons for people to get "free contents" through file sharing. It could be that they don't respect intellectual property, can't afford it, there is no legal ways available to get it(it happens), being cheap, much more convenient to get, or just habitually hoarding stuff that they don't necessarily need, etc...

The argument from the publisher side(and some consumers) is that every single copy that's illegally distributed is a revenue loss, that's how they count the loss in millions & billions. But the truth is that vast majority of those people would've never "acquired" those contents in the first place if they had to pay for those. Same as most people who always pay for the contents would not have copied them for free even given a choice.

It's also proven that file sharing could actually benefit the publishers and help them to gain dominance and popularity to the market, there're plenty of those cases, such as Microsoft Windows, Office, Adobe products(ex:Photohop), and lots of new music from both well known & unknown artists, etc...
I don't know about others but if I were a publisher, I would rather have those people who would never have paid for my contents anyway to have it and serve as free ad through word of mouth than to get pissed about every "potential revenue loss" or say something like, "OMG you didn't pay for them! You must delete them NOW or you're a thief!!".

If your dad is not experienced user and is in Canada I would recommend a Kobo touch.

I have one its pretty good, book selection is not as good a Kindle. Plus you can buy in Canada and its more supported here.

I have a kindle fire, its basically useless in Canada

I purchased a Kindle Touch 3G last week while on vacation in Puerto Rico. I had no trouble whatsoever linking it to my Canadian Amazon account. I have had no trouble purchasing books directly on the Kindle and having them delivered via the 3G connection (even here in Canada).

To be succinct: The Kindle Touch 3G+WiFi is completely functional here in Canada.

I'm going to Florida next week and was considering buy the 3G touch while down there. Good to hear that it works in Canada. My only concern is, what will you do if it breaks while under warranty? Do you think Amazon would exchange it or fix it even though you bought it down there?
