It is exactly like reading a .mobi file, because you are actually reading one if you convert a epub into mobi.

The quality of the conversion depends on the quality of the input file.

Thanks, SCION. I just love the way the UI looks, although I find the HOME too crowded (the ad at the bottom?). Too bad it doesn't support foreign dictionaries so far. That puts the Touch in a no-buy category for me.

Thanks that confirmed for me the screen is the same as K4. The same grey background. Oh well I am happy with my tiny reader.

CNET gave it an Editor's Choice and a 8.3 excellent rating.

The good: The Kindle Touch is a compact, lightweight, and affordable e-book reader with an e-ink touch screen. It offers access to a massive catalog of books, magazines, newspapers, and audiobooks via Amazon.com's familiar online store, as well as to online loaners from your local library. It also supports MP3s and--for some titles--text-to-speech.

The bad: All accessories--including a cover and an AC charger--cost extra. You also need to spend an extra $40 if you don't want the ad-supported Special Offers version, and $50 more if you want 3G wireless support. The lack of hard page-turn buttons may frustrate left-handed readers.

The bottom line: The Kindle Touch is Amazon's best e-reader to date.

Yes. Any DRM-free MOBI can be side-loaded via USB to the Kindle for reading.

Paul Thurrott's review just came out.

For those of you who don't know him, Thurrott is an analyst on the Microsoft side of the world. At the same time, he is an incredible Amazon fanboy and writes a lot about the company's strategies and products.

And he hates the Kindle Touch. Really, really hates it.

He has some interesting points. It's a good read. It certainly has left me happy to be using my Kindle Keyboard a bit longer.

He's making too much out of "where do I tap to bring up the menu" thing. When you power up the device for the first time, isn't there an onscreen guide that tells you where the tap zones are and for what purpose?

His complaints about how things have changed reminds me that there's always folks reminiscing about the "olden days".

Well... I always think of the "Mom test" with such devices. That is, how many "support calls" would I have to deal with if my Mom got one. And from his description, it isn't passing. (Nor does the K3 for that matter. I was hoping the KT would be a lot easier to use.)

And there a few little things. I also hold my Kindle in my left hand and expect to be able to change pages easily without using the other hand. It sounds like this is easy with the KT in the right hand because you can touch with your thumb, but a pain with the left hand because touching makes you go back. (Swiping is that little bit more annoying if you're doing it about 100 times an hour.)

Anyway, I don't own one, and I'm guessing you do, so you probably know better than me.

You don't need two hands to change pages. That was one of the selling features of the Touch. That's what I was saying about the onscreen guide telling you where to touch to change pages, go backward, pull up the menu.

Quote:
New Touch Experience - EasyReach
Amazon invented a new type of touch experience that eliminates the fatigue caused by continuously swiping to turn the page, and that allows readers to hold Kindle with either hand while still turning pages comfortably. With EasyReach, Kindle Touch users can effortlessly page forward in a book or a periodical while holding the device with either hand. Tapping on most of the screen area will page forward, the most common action done when reading; tapping in a narrow area near the left edge of the device turns to the previous page; and tapping on the top part of the screen brings up the toolbars for further options. This is another way that Kindle helps readers get lost in the author's world.

Being left-handed, it didn't present a big problem for me - the "page back" section of the touch screen is really, really small.

It might vary depending on how one holds it and how big one's hands are, though.

The tap zone page turning is the best part of the Touch. I have some issues syncing it with Amazon (I got the WIFI only model) but I side loaded I Am Legend and read almost all of it in bed using my left hand to hold it (I'm RH). The thing is so light, and page turns so seamless, that the device "disappeared", one of the original K1 design goals.

I'm a Microsoft software developer and gadget-head as well, but maturity has taught me to focus on devices for what they are, not for what every other similar device is. With that in mind, I think the Kindle Touch is the best e-reader to date.

I also own or operate these Kindle readers:
K1, Kindle Keyboard, 2XKindle DX, 3X Kindle for IPhone, Kindle for Android, 2X Kindle for PC, Kindle for Mac.
