My reaction to that would be similar to yours, and I think that the authors
are aware that "skipping editing" would result in less profit. Their main
problem will be establishing a reputation for a good product that people
are willing to buy. There is not really much of a market for badly written,
edited, or any other low production quality factor ebooks. There are just
too many free ebooks to pay for bad ones.
