Great suggestions here for none-vampire porn vampire books.
How does this thread get to two pages without a mention of Anne Rice? I hate those cheesey vampire porn (rommance) books, but foun Rice's series very good. |

Plead Insanity
I'd strongly suggest reading Plead Insanity by Sandra Giles. Only thing is, it's only available on the kindle/kindle app, but at least its cheap!

+1 for Salem's Lot. It was awesome. I am Legend by Richard Matheson was a sublime reading experience as well.

For anthologies, By Blood We Live edited by John Joseph Adams and Teeth edited by Ellen Datlow/Terri Windling.
Maria Dahvana Headley's Queen of Kings has a vampire-like Cleopatra. There's also Guillermo del Toro/Chuck Hogan's The Strain trilogy. Also enjoyed Baltimore,: Or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire by Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola. Last edited by flipreads; 01-23-2012 at 11:13 PM. |

I will add 2nd recomendations for I am Legend by Richard Matheson and Already Dead by Charlie Huston. Oh, and Hogun/Del Torros The Strain Trilogy was good too.
Christopher Moores Vampire Trilogy (Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, & Bite Me) were fun. If you liked Mr Kings Vampires (as I did), you may not enjoy Anne Rices versions as much (I've read the 1st 2, and dont plan on bothering with any more) |

Blood Red Moon by Jane Fancher is an unusual vampire story, about a vampire who has lived long enough (his journals go back to pre-Roman times) to develop morals. Some of it takes place in Transylvania (of course) and some in Seattle. It may be a bit long for some tastes, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. And there will be a sequel to it sometime -soon I hope. You can find it over at ClosedCircle.net for sure, maybe at Amazon and others.

I've heard good things about Brian Lumley’s Necroscope series. They're on my TBR list.
Of course as others have already said, Dracula and Salem's Lot are must-reads. Anne Rice's vampire series is quite good, starting with Interview with the Vampire. |

I'll throw in a recommendation for Fred Saberhagen's "Dracula" series. The series went on for many years, coming to ten books or so by the end, but my favorites are:
The Dracula Tapes is Dracula retelling the story of Stoker's novels from his point of view. Very rewarding to read this and Stoker's novel together. The Holmes-Dracula File has Holmes on a case in which Dracula becomes involved. An Old Friend of the Family, where Dracula is called on by a human family whose line he's friends with when one of their children is kidnapped. I'll also throw in with the recommendation of Let the Right One In. I'll note, though, that the story is somewhat painful reading early on -- the abuse that the protagonist's schoolmates inflict on him is quite awful. It's not strictly a "vampire book" per se, but John Ford's The Dragon Waiting is an excellent alternate history fantasy novel, and some of the major characters are vampires. I may have missed someone mentioning it, but Le Fanu's story "Carmilla" is excellent, and should be on any vampire fan's reading list. Kim Newman's Anno Dracula is another alternate-history fantasy... this one of a world where Stoker's band failed in their mission to destroy Dracula, and he married Queen Victoria, leading to an England in which vampires are out in the open, and it's become fashionable to become a vampire. I believe there are two sequels, but I've never picked them up, I'm afraid, even though the first book was quite good. |

Here's another one;
Guardian - Adult-Thriller Vampire book (contains adult themes and language). It's not a soft gushy romance and they certainly don't sparkle, but it does contain adult-behaviour aspects more so than focusing on things like hunting/killing vamps. Full details at http://elitadaniels.com/guardian *disclaimer: I publish this book. |

"The Vampire Tapestry" by by Suzy Charnas is a bit of a classic as well as S.P. Somtow's books about the child vampire Timmy Valentine. The first one is "Vampire Junction"
