Made the goal already. I have a lot of time to read and this challenge helped me to read more and keep at it.

Seriously, textbooks are thick, and academic articles can be real hard to swallow...

Reading number 100 at the moment. It's a long one, almost 600 pages, but I am nearly three quarters through so I will surely make the goal. In fact exceed it as I will read at least three more books this month. To be totally honest about where I stand now I selected: "I'm crossing it now."

I'll try to work out how many pages I read this year, if anyone wants to join me I'll start a new thread for that.

Already thought of: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=112273 Though 50,000 may not be what you would want as a target.

It's your challenge, so if you think textbooks count, then they do .

There's no restriction between fiction and non-fiction for this challenge, so I'd say they do.

Actually - I'm going to do something along these lines:

Looks like 60 books is going to be OK for me this year. Up it to 70 books as a bit of a challenge and then allocate an average number of pages per book. 300 pages per book seems to be a good size.

So you make it 300 * 70 = 21,000 pages for the year.

That's what I'm intending to do. The page numbering I'll just take from Calibre (I have the count pages plugin). It's not perfectly accurate, but that's OK - you just take a method and stick to it I guess.

I hit the hundred mark in late September. I've decided my goal in 2012 will be to read fewer books. One hundred should be about right.

It was valuable for me to log my books as I read them. Looking over the list, I've decided to be more thoughtful about my reading next year. I don't know how to quantify these, but my aims include:

Less light reading. This one will be tough, as frequently during the work week when I'm tired in the evening, somethng mindless is as much as I can face. I had some success earlier this year by making a point of reading the most difficult of my currents reads as I could manage without zoning out, not just going for the easy option. I have to go back to this.

Expand my horizons, get out of my comfort zone. I'm too likely to reach for the kinds of books I already like. However, yet another book about the world wars or 20th-century Britain doesn't do much to expand my knowledge or understanding of the world. I'd like to expand my range geographically (I read nothing from Latin America and little from Africa and Asia) and historically and increase the proportion of literary fiction in the mix as well. There's an interesting-looking GR group that is going to read 52 books from 52 countries next year, but I'm not prepared to commit to that. I don't need to be that well rounded.

Don't let Overdrive drive my reading choices. This was a surprisingly significant problem. I'd troll my elibrary lists looking for anything I'd consider reading and add it to my holds. I found some great books I wouldn't have known about that way, but I also read far too many pedestrian memoirs and popular history books. The problem was compounded in that whenever a bunch of my holds became available at once (which seemed to happen frequently), the rest of my reading went on hold. This led to disjointed experiences of some books and also kept me from participating in various reading groups to the extent I'd intended.

Read more of my TBR pbooks. I had one colossal fail this year. I had loaded up a laundry basket of pbooks which I meant to work off. I did fine into early May, reading about 20 of them. I haven't gone near the increasingly dusty accumulation since. I have a lot of pbooks I really intend to read, and given the cost of ebooks plus the Overdrive issue this resolution is being renewed with fervor.

All in all, I'm not unhappy with what I've read. But I'd like to get more out of my reading next year and I hope listing my aims will help. If anyone's curious about my 2011 reads, shame-making junky ones and all, here is my GR 2011 list.

I avg around 100-120 books a year so I had never set this as a challenge.
I mostly read series and I challenged myself to catch up on all the different series I am following without starting a new series I am still short on that by 10-15 books. The reason is that I started about 8 more series.

Unfortunately NO !

Life has a way of throwing MANY curve-balls at you right ... Well I've had loads of them this year ...

Hey I'm still reading loads of really great stuff ... But I am way behind my target ...

And I still need to thank Mobileread for my eReading life ... It's my first stop whenever I want to know or find anything eBook, the support and friendship here as always been impressive ...

Next Year ... I WILL reach my goal ... Now how do I read 4 eReaders simultaniously ???

I finished my hundredth book this morning, so I'm done! . Didn't think I'd stand a chance at the start of the year, but by foregoing a lot of radio listening, and some TV, I have done it.

I'm not going to take up the challenge next year, as I want to read the books and short stories that I feel like reading, without worrying about page count or time wasting. That said, it has been really fun, and led me to read more widely than I would have thought.

I think I might be able to finish 90 books this year. Counting the textbooks and I'll fill the quota.

I hit 50 last week. I was pretty pleased with myself.

I didn't really have the goal of trying to reach 100, I signed up at the start of the year because I realised I had no idea how many new books I read in a year. New being the operative word as I didn't count rereads (and I reread a lot).

So... over 50. Cool!

There's no reason to be ashamed about anything we read and your list is far from one-dimensional or easy in many places.

I've already compiled my challenge list for next year. Only 26 books on the challenge list, but it should let me fit in some other options along the way as a realistic goal for me would be about 36-40 books. I based my challenge list on years and letters of the alphabet. At least one book from every decade since 1900 and at one book from an author with a last name beginning with every letter of the alphabet. My list is already on GoodReads here.. At the start of the year I'll move them to the to read pile and start checking them off.

I'm hoping it's a strange and wondrous journey. It's also a bit of a catch-up on some things I should have read by now with a few favourite authors thrown in (Mistry, Pratchett, Valente).

I like the country angle mentioned. Maybe next year will be at least twenty-four countries or maybe an all-Canadian list as I don't read enough local content.
