The T1 works fine. The only time it crashed was because i was nasty with it. For the rest, it works. The PC app is crap though. It's it's only thing I had problem with. And that caused me to get nasty with the reader and crash it. Last edited by EowynCarter; 10-24-2011 at 06:22 AM. |

While not a fan of the gloss finish I love the black T1. I've also not had any problems with mine. The "library" works well enough but nothing to brag about.
I use mine strictly as a "reader". That is what I bought it for and it works great as a reader. I tried out the web function and while usable in a pinch the "grey" screen does not make for a pleasant experience. I've had to use Sony Customer Support/Service once when a reader got the dreaded corner screen problem. They were great and immediately replaced the unit. Matter of fact they shipped me a new unit while I still had the failed one. I sent the broken one back when I had the new one in my hand. Well done I'd say. This is my third Sony reader and the 2 older models are still working, though the "5" model has a broken on/off switch...it still works fine with a paper clip to push the switch. I'm also a fan of the plastic body. I prefer the light weight of the reader. I also like plastic, in all its varied forms. |

I am very pleased with my T1. It's my first e-reader, and it's brought back a lot of the pleasure in reading that I'd lost with the distraction of so many gadgets.
I haven't had to deal with their customer support, because there haven't been any problems. |

Considering how perfect my Sony 950 is (and my Sony 505, too), I see no reason to even consider updating to a newer device of any brand, including the new Sony T1. Prople who own a Sony 950 still own the best device. Everything else that's coming along (in dedicated readers) is just a cheap imitation

The problem that a reasonable number of users do have problems with freezing units.
And I estimate that it is a question of luck and/or kind of using until the (assumed) bug will be visible. If I buy something, it should not be a question of luck but (technical) design and quality control. A. |

Maybe the PRS-T1 could use fine-tuning here and there, but nothing bash-worthy IMHO. An other point i've noticed is that the T1 is less lenient than the orizon as far as bad coded ePub goes. Some refuses to open. But, sigil and mantano agrees the ePub is malformed. Last edited by EowynCarter; 10-24-2011 at 08:14 AM. |

I am a bit skeptical that Sony will address this in a FW update, so I would wait and see. Another related question: guys, if the device can be rooted, would another reading application work any better, or is this PDF slowdown issue too low level, and would affect all software reading applications? |

No, reading a reflowed text PDF results in massive slowdowns, and is not usable. This is a step backwards, at least at the moment. I have not yet had the page turn issue or freezing issue using my EPUBs, but I do use the page turn buttons instead of the swipe, but of course that is not acceptable to all, and is thus another serious problem.

I use swipe to turn page, and no problem. What about waiting to see if there is some actual problem, give sony a chance to fix things before bashing ? Last edited by EowynCarter; 10-24-2011 at 09:32 AM. |

Please keep in mind that the number of users posting in a forum about their problem is in no way representative of how common that problem is. It's like working in a Tech Support department, you never hear from the 99% of customers who don't have problems. Forums work the same way. |

Sorry, I don't want to make someones T1 bad.
I think Sony WILL (because they have to) bring up a firmware update to solve the freezing problem (not the 'freezing' in PDFs but the complete freeze when using the touch screen). But I fear (knowing Sony's average behavior) they possibly will not fix the PDF-slowdown in near future. A rooted reader could profit from another reading software (as other readers can be greatly enhanced with PRS+) which I consider a huge improvement over former reader models. A. Edit: ScalyFreak: Thank you. You're right. Of course I know about the sample shift based on posts in a forum Last edited by Analogus; 10-24-2011 at 09:53 AM. |

Out of curiosity, how bad are the slowdowns you see in reading PDF on android? Do page turns sometimes take 5 seconds, or even 10 seconds? If that's so, I would be surprised if Sony could do anything about this for the T1... Quote:
If there is a firmware issue, I am a bit pessimistic about how fast Sony will move to address this based on their previous behaviour, which was slow to no response. For example, my 950 is a great device, but landscape mode is horribly broken, and not usable, yet they have never fixed it... |

I've owned the PRS-600, PRS-650, and now the PRS-T1. Perhaps I'm one of the lucky ones as my T1 has been great so far. I've only had a problem once when i had the stuck multiple page turns. I've read two books on it so far and I've been really happy with it. I don't read pdfs, I have an iPad for that. I don't use the PC software, as I use Calibre and have never connected the T1 to my computer. I will not go back to the PRS-650, although there was nothing wrong with the 650. The T1 is just better with Wifi, better screen, lighter feel, multiple fonts, etc...
In general, I like Sony products. I love their Vaio Z line of laptops. I used to be a Minidisc fan and owned many Minidisc player/recorders from Sony. They blend performance and aesthetics well in their products. I've not had bad issues with Sony customer support. The only time I needed support was a broken Vaio from a long time ago. They Fedex over the packaging box with a pre-paid express return label. Service was excellent but that was like 10 years ago. With that said, I can believe that their service has deteriorated as I've seen more and more complaints about their service. Like I said earlier, perhaps I've been lucky with Sony products as I've not had to use their service much. As for their place in the e-ink reader market. It will be tough to unseat Amazon. We will have to see how good the new Kindle Touch will be. I've never liked the way the Kindles looked and the new gray color isn't doing it for me either. I know the T1 has problems. Just because I've not experienced them doesn't mean they don't exist. However, remember this is a e-ink reader running a new OS for Sony, Android. There are bound to be bugs. They are most likely fixable with a future patch. |

Statistical shift of bad units mentioned in this forum:
Problem is of course that many just post in a forum to tell BAD NEWS (for example feezing T1). So nobody knows the real percentage of bad units. I've had therefore a rough half quantitative look at this poll https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=153031 to get an impression of how many members are NEW in this forum just for posting their problems... ...and came to this numbers: Far more than 50% of the users posting there are 'old' users beeing here for more than 2 month, have done more than 30 posts and own more readers from Sony than just the T1. In both groups, 'old' and 'young' members mover 50% have experienced the freezing problem when using the touch screen. So at least 25% of members taken part in the poll have beeing here BEFORE having the possibility to experience problems with the T1 HAVE had TROUBLES. I know that this number are very rough and maybe not representative. But nevertheless (for me) they are pointing on a REAL PROBLEM of the new model. A. |
