It's not clear what's happening on Amazon's webpage with the dx. When you click on the Kindle section in the upper left hand corner of the website, it isn't listed. However, when you click on any of the individual Kindles, it appears in the comparison table, and if you click on the DX from there, it takes you to a page to order the DX. Nothing on that page suggests that it is discontinued, unsupported, or an older version of the firmware.
Secondly, those of us here are "in the know"- we talk about K2, K3, K4, etc. Nowhere is that terminology used by Amazon itself, though. In fact, software version is NOT listed on the comparison table. So, if I wasn't following MobileRead, I wouldn't know which Kindle has which software on it, because that isn't reported on Amazon's website. For what it's worth, that's actually why I ended up here. After the new K3 came out, I looked on Amazon's website, saw that there was also a new DX, and said, hey, the bigger screen will be more useful since I mostly read pdfs. Since they were both listed as "latest generation", I expected them to have the same software. (I'm not going to argue about whether that was reasonable or not.) When I was trying to figure out why my DX couldn't handle password protected pdfs, I ended up here, which is how I found out that "latest generation" for the DX meant second generation software, but for the 6th inch Kindle "latest generation" meant third generation software (at the time). Now, I would like to note that the DX page no longer says "latest generation". The upshot is, in my humble opinion, that Amazon ought to add a column to the table for "software version", instead of relying on people to find sites like this to find out. |

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this particular issue. I don't think any manufacturer has an obligation to provide updates beyond bug fixes for any equipment, whether it's currently sold or not. That said, it does seem a bit rubbish that they've provided this for some current models and not others. I am curious about one thing, though. As a K3 owner, there are two parts to this update. Right now, personal documents appear in the "Manage your Kindle" part of the Amazon website, and I can use that to send them to my Kindle. When my Kindle gets the update, I'll be able to get them via my Kindle. Do K2 and DX owners get personal documents archived? If not, what happens if you have a K3 and a K2 or DX? |

I have a Dx and it is fine...look
1) You can read pdf's..there's countless pdf's out there 2) You can take out books from the library now 3) There are ways to kinda put 3.2 on it which makes things even better..granted it takes away games but that isn't that bad when you gain highlighting and dictionary in pdfs 4) There's always dukan for epubs. 5) There's always calibre for epubs and magazines There's plenty of content out there.. |

If you are so unhappy, you can send it to me and I'll put it to good use. Since it is a dead product the price should be nice and cheap.

I'm happy with my new (used) DXG. The extra screen size makes it very easy to read my PDF files.
I wish I wasn't so afraid to install a couple hacks on it though. (3.2, Dukan, Screen Saver, Timeout.) Not being very technical, I'm afraid I'm going to brick it. Can somebody tell me if the hacks are easy to install? |

I'm not sure why there is so much hostility in this thread to what I think is a reasonable complaint. We're not talking about a hardware issue, so the person who was like "are you going to complain that the DX doesn't have Touch too" is being a little ridiculous. I think it is reasonable to expect firmware updates and features. I think it's more ridiculous that so many people think such expectations are stupid.. I guess the companies are winning people over into thinking that one has to buy a new product every year because expecting updates is being "whiny."

There may very well be a hardware limitation that prevents the new code from working. However the new code could also probably be ported to the older systems if they wanted to do so. I'm afraid this is the trend in most consumer electronics, as soon as the new product is out, the old stuff is ignored no matter how bad the problem might be. Just look at cell phone support with Android, you are lucky they keep the connections open for you after the newest model arrives, it is all an attempt to get you to upgrade sooner to lock in that monthly income.
