taking the long view

You might consider how this will play out over time.

If each child has his/her own account they will begin a book collection that can last a lifetime. Since Amazon stores all of your books for you indefinitely, they could someday share the books they bought now and love most with their own children someday.

The alternative means that someday you'll have to decide which one gets their shared library.

This would certainly apply to some. This isn't a concern for me because I remove DRM from books. I plan to continue doing so with the kids' account. I'm a big fan of Amazon and hope they're around for many decades to come. But once I buy a book I don't want to rely on any company for access.

I use to buy alot of books from CyberRead who is no longer so if I didn't backup my books I would lose my purchases. Now Lits are unable to download even in my BOB account. I changed hard drives and now I can't redownload them or the ones from Fictionwise. Now Harlequin says they are removing all but epubs from my account to be sure to download the other formats.
