I've slid in under the wire (think the code expires tonight) with the $1.99 compilation album:

"99 Must-Have Classic Gold"

This is the same thing I did last time there was one of these codes - using it on a classical compilation album that's on sale lets me load up my dad's mp3 player with a bunch of music he likes for free, and then I can even listen to some myself when I'm in a mellow mood.

Not sure I'll find anything to do with the penny left over

Many many thanks to the OP, apesmom, for the code, and sorry you got zapped for it! (I tried to give you karma, but it seems I gave you some recently already, so I couldn't again...good thoughts coming your way anyway!)

Got any quick $2 recommendations? I guess there's a few hours left....

FF2, are you interested in jazz?

Last time I looked the Philly Joe Jones & Elvin Jones album "Together!" was available for $1.99.

The bulk of the Steve Marcus album "Count's Rock Band" is available for $1.38.

We do. Look, like it or not, posting an affiliate link and then saying "this is not an affiliate link" is lying. It may have been inadvertent; I'm quite prepared to accept that it was, but it was, nonetheless, a lie. Especially coming hours after a specific request NOT to post affiliate links. If you don't actually KNOW what is or is not an affiliate link, it's a bit silly to just copy a link from a deals site (where a little thought will tell you that EVERY link is going to be an affiliate link) and then make a specific statement that it isn't one. That was the reason for the moderator comment. Not the inadvertent posting of an affiliate link, but the specific and erroneous statement that it WASN'T an affiliate link. This looked to the moderating team like a deliberate attempt to mislead our members and to flout the new rules, and was in fact reported to us as such by a number of MobileRead members.

Did it ever occur to any of the moderators that precisely BECAUSE it was only a few hours after the new policy, it might have been inadvertent - that some folks (average users, not the experts) hadn't thought through all the sneaky ways affiliate links might creep in? That perhaps a private message with clarification might have been more appropriate than a very public and harsh "liar" comment?

I myself would probably have not thought of a third-party affiliate tag, although somewhere in the back of my brain I knew/know that deal aggregator sites make their money that way. But since all of the uproar and discussioin had been about people directly benefiting from their OWN affiliate tags, I probably wouldn't have made that connection. So, call me a newbie, or maybe just not affiliate-tag-savvy, but this could have been me. And I would have been very upset (and am upset on "apesmom's" behalf) to be so publicly dressed down for an inadverent mistake that didn't even benefit me.

I am really sad that what used to feel like a friendly community has become so judgmental. Now it feels much more harsh, and much less enjoyable. I've found myself looking at the forums less often, and suspect I'll probably slowly just drift away.

Making a mistake is not lying. Have you ever said something is what it is not and did so because you thought you were correct? Was that lying?

I feel this affiliate link stuff is too harsh and too far out there. These new rules just make things not as nice and not as open as before. Just kill the new rules and let's go back to being the way we were.

I seriously doubt that is going to happen any time soon.

The reason for the new rules is that the old system generated far too many reports per post, and after acting on one of them, the moderators still have to clean out and no-action (or whatever it's called here) all the other now invalid reports that still clog up the system. they got tired of all the extra work.

Whether the "don't lie" note was too harsh or not is beside the point. The new rules are not going to change. Can we please just accept reality and learn to live with it, and move on now?

I just heard about his passing a few minutes ago. Thanks for the link.

Oddly enough, I have been watching episodes from The Fugitive lately, enjoying the music.
