You mean walled in like the Apple iPad, the best selling tablet of all time?

I've always loved the way people equate "best selling " with "best ". The best selling newspaper in the UK is the Sun - it's shite. The most watched TV programs are invariably shite. By that logic, either Dan Brown or JK Rowling are the best living writers. Best selling is not a measure of quality.

..
It's $200. No one is being taken advantage of. There are plenty of other "open" options at much higher price points.

Amazon's tablet is mostly content. music, movies and books, and probably audible.com books too. I think the average consumer is going to like not having to go to 10 places to get their movie. Or try to remember which service they bought X movie on.. Amazon its all in one place.

You do have to love the irony that it is a closed system that is really going to finally let android tablets take off..

My biggest gripe is can we sideload books we've bought from other places. I imagine you can since you can on Nook and iPad.

It says it supports the same books as the normal Kindles like mobi/prc, PDF. doc...etc so I would guess yes Sideloading books will work. Don't know about Sideloading apps though. Just have to wait and see.

You missed my point by a mile! The point is that even the BEST SELLING tablet is definitely walled in too, so his point seemed ridiculous to me. Apple's iPad is just as walled in as Amazon's Fire. People don't seem to be bothered by that as far as the iPad goes so I doubt they will be bothered by it as far as the Fire goes. I never said the iPad was the best tablet nor did I imply that.

In which case I apologise.

I think my point is still valid; I just made it at the wrong time!

I think the point is that if the Amazon Fire does not allow apps for other ebook sources (Apple's iPad allows nook, kobo, and even kindle) then the Fire is much more walled in than the iPad.

That said, I imagine Amazon cannot reach the price point it has set without making it up in ebook sales. My guess is you won't see apps for nook, kobo or sony anytime soon.

Given that Amazon have already said that you'll be able to load applications via the USB port, and hence install ANY Android App, I'm not sure how you reach that conclusion.

You might want to check the link you just posted, Harry. Nothing is settled on that issue just yet.

But I will be happy to be wrong. Just like a certain person who confidently predicted there would be no new eink kindles announced on Wed.

Looking at Amazon's App Market I see a bunch of ebook readers, including Aldiko (ePub, including ADE), Adobe, and Kobo. The only thing I see missing that could be supported is B&N, and well .. it IS Amazon's biggest ebook rival. I don't think it's too badly walled in.

The link does not show Amazon saying that.
