The iPad gaming community is big and getting bigger, according to a new report from market research firm Interpret. Total iPad gamers number 8 million out of 11.4 million iPad owners in the U.S.

The iPad’s appeal extends not only to traditional console gamers, but also to a growing portion of people new to digital gaming, says Interpret. People who use their iPads for gaming are increasingly older, with 40 percent falling into the 35-to-65 age group category during its second quarter 2011 survey vs. just 31 percent from its first survey period last year. Many more women are playing, too. Interpret found that the share of female iPad gamers was up to 48 percent during its most recent poll, vs. just 40 percent in 2010.

They are getting into on the ground floor of a rapidly growing business. If B&N plans to do this, its good forward planning, IMO.

A lot of people play Facebook games. They don't buy desktop computers to play them.

Even a caveman should be able to see that Sony is coasting on past successes.

Analogy FAIL. A desktop computer isn't a mobile device. People buy and use mobile devices for different purposes than they use a desktop computer for.

Just admit that you CAN'T speak authoritatively on why people buy iPads because:

1. You can't read their thoughts.

2. The EVIDENCE shows that one of the most popular uses of the iPad is playing games.

I am sure one of the most popular uses for a desktop are Facebook games.
Want to know where you will see the most iPads? College campuses. They have their textbooks on them, they surf the web on them, and check their email.

If someone was going to buy a device to game, they would buy a much better, much cheaper portable game system. The concept isn't hard to grasp. They play games on them because they have them, they don't buy them to play games on them. If they did, they would be really stupid.

That's odd. I have seen iPads frequently outside college campuses and I'm pretty sure that HarryT, for example, isn't a college student. The article I referenced spoke of people aged 55-64 playing games. Doesn't seem like 'college age' to me. Could it be that you are just wrong about who buys iPads and what they use them for? After all, there are now close to 40 million iPad users -dummies all , according to you- and you haven't even seen them all, much less guessed at what they could be using their ipads for.

As for your Sony? It would be trivially easy to argue that it was overpriced even at $150. Don't get me wrong, its a good looking piece of kit. But I can think of three e-readers that are:

1. Cheaper than the Sony
2. Has more features than the Sony -wireless capability , for one.
3. Connects to a better bookstore than the Sony.

People in glass houses shouldn't be throwing any stones. Just sayin'.

Why??? People buy tablets and computers of all sorts as a way of getting things done, the fact that they can also play games is an added bonus... How many portable game systems let you word process, do some spreadsheet work, access your MSO files, edit a few photos, check where you are, navigate to where you want to go etc etc. Sorry Apple-hater your anti tablet arguments fail by not recognising the multi-purpose capabilities which are attractive to consumers whether Apple, Android or other system... may not suit you but suits millions of other people and doesn't mean your "I'm right" view has any validity at all, insulting those with a different view to yours is simply patronising, arrogant and down right rude...

Consoles don't make money, they actually lose money on the consoles and make the money from the games.

Indeed it does. I had a nook color for awhile, but the iPad was a much better balance of price and hardware so I switched. It also allowed me to do everything I wanted to do with the Nook without hacking it. Still use my Nook classic a lot though, but still see no reason to upgrade it, especially since there is no 3G nook to replace it with.
