I see them everywhere! I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, so naturally there's tons of iPads along with Nooks and Kindles. I actually see more e-devices than "real" books.

The only reason I got to this forum in the first place was because I saw two separate e-readers out in the real world (Hong Kong international airport, June 2011).

I knew of their existence from way back, and it was irrational for me to become so obsessed with getting 'the' e-reader overnight, but it did happen.

Right now, more iPads in the real world (and some physical books). Probably because e-readers are not sold in stores here, so owners would have to ship them back like I did.

Mine is in my bag all the time; light enough to bring everywhere just in case there is a chance I had time to read.

Does college count as the real world? That's the main reason I got interested in ereaders: it seemed as if everyone at my university had a Kindle.

I'm seeing more and more ebook readers in the wild. Now that kindles are sold in stores here in Canada I'm seeing more of them than perhaps Any other brand. I do see Sony and Kobo readers often enough, though. I see tablets all the time, but whether they are being used for reading is debatable.

(In Sydney Australia – mainly on trains) For a while I use to see as many Kobo and Sony Readers as Kindle but with the demise of Borders here and Sony being hard to find, I now see more and more Kindles. The main reason is you can buy them here in the local grocery store, while the others brands are hard to find. I think this will swing back when Kobo and Sony start pushing harder here again.

The interesting thing I see every now and then is nook readers (I notice them more seeing I own nooks myself) They are not sold here and you have to jump through hoops to get them.. but I keep seeing the odd one here and there.

I been thinking if an ebook reader supplier like Kobo opened a small kiosk at Central and/or Town Hall Stations (The two busiest) they could sell a truck load of readers. As I still see far far more people with paper books than ereaders.

3 people where I work (that I know of) have Kindles. I see another regular at a Thai restaurant I frequent also has a Kindle. Don't encounter too many people walking around with their expensive iPad toys.

I take my NOOK practically everywhere, but have yet to encounter another owner outside a B&N store.

Took mine to the beach once, but even with a water/sand proof cover, I think it was a little too hot to be subjecting my device to those conditions.

Flew several times this year and saw quite a few, mostly Kindles.

Perhaps we don't see as many ebook readers in the wild as we'd think because we've all got our noses stuck in ours

Yep. iPads, Kindle 3s, and Nook Colors are what I immediately recognize.

On the NYC subway, readers are becoming nearly as common as books. Mostly Kindles. When I flew from NY to LA this summer, I noticed a LOT of ipads (a lot more than Kindles) and people actually reading on them (as opposed to playing games or watching movies).
