If an author, someone that is supposed to be a guardian of correct spelling and syntax and other such concerns dismisses rudely it which he is supposed to uphold, literature is doomed.

I will add that good authors can use bad spelling and bad grammar judiciously to make a stylistic point. See also the "spiraling into madness" chapters in Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury".

And I will ALSO say, as an Amazon reviewer, that I don't award demerits for errors unless they're just truly distracting. I mean, hey, errors happen. If I can figure out what the author meant, I don't worry about it.

BUT. If you're an author, you don't argue with a reviewer. That's just common sense. Even if the reviewer is wrong, you just ignore it or -- if appropriate -- you say "thank you so much for your review. I will keep your points in mind as I move forward on my next book and I hope it will be more enjoyable for you" or something similar.

Authors who do that, get MORE reviews because it's classy and the reviewer realizes they aren't going to be stalked for eternity if they give anything less than 5-star glowing praise. And I suspect they get more readers because, hey, classy and anybody can make mistakes and maybe the next one is better.

There an internet marketing meme out there that holds that mistreating customers can be good for business - especially if they complain about it - because it leads to more publicity and more google hits.

I don't know whether it will work for authors...but there are a lot more MR members who now know this guys name and may have even visited his website than there were yesterday.

Sure, if your source of income is web-hits (and his may well be).

And if the "badness" of the book is something subjective or racy, it could drive sales up nicely. I once reviewed a "historical fiction" book on the Salem witch trials that read like a violent porn novel, and several people bought it based on my review out of morbid curiosity.

But I'm not sure that "bad spelling" will really drive the sales up. Although I can see a few people buying just to leave more bad reviews in revenge.

Still, if he's making the most money on web-hits, then yes, trolling is a very profitable strategy. Not the best way to ensure a strong author presence on Amazon, though.

So I've often wondered what the correct term was for someone who leaves comments on a blog (or other such whatnot on the internet), and the thread title happened to remind me.

Commenter
Commentor
Commentator

Nothing seems quite right. My spellchecker doesn't like the first two and the last one—while spelled correctly—hardly seems appropriate.

WTH!? "One who comments?"

I have now evolved into a method writer. If I am writing a chapter where the character is angry, I must be angry, or it doesn't work. If he is depressed, then I have to be depressed also.
I'm trying to visualize what will happen when he advances to the point of trying to cope with more than one character at a time.

I've wondered this, too. I use Commentor, but I wish the spell checker gods would sanction it.

Paul Harvey used to say that the correct term was "Common Tater."

Guess he was an authority on the topic.

It isn't so much that writing as a profession leads to mental illness, I think it's more that writing attracts a lot of people with mental illness. It's something you can do on your own, and until fairly recently you never really had to interact with "normal" people.
There's always sci-fi as a way to avoid "normal" people.
