You know the old saying, RedC...

Don't make assumptions, because it makes an "ass" out of "u" and "mption".

Or something like that...

One would think, as many times as I re-learn that lesson, that it would stick.

Yep, that's exactly what I think they think! That most folks buy a book, read it once, archive and never read again. And for folks who *do* work that way, organization is probably not as critical. But for the rest of us, they need to get a clue. People who buy readers generally have a love of reading in the first place, so there are plenty of us who want all our books on tap, without having to re-download them.

If you advertise being able to carry 1200 books on a reader, you darn sure ought to provide organization to handle same. And it shouldn't have to all be redone if you need to unregister/re-register your device.

As you say, it wouldn't hurt if they'd listen to the folks on their forum.

And don't feel bad -- I bought the Nook first by mistake myself. As I said, Sony really isn't advertising this difference like they should and could.
I didn't buy my Nook by mistake, but I also didn't realize at the time that the organization was so bad. And I bought BEFORE the Sony x50 series existed. I had liked the look of the organization on a previous model Sony I got to handle, but didn't like the screen glare of the older model. Once the x50 line arrived, I was soon interested, but didn't feel like I could switch readers that soon. And until I'd accumulated more books, Nook wasn't a problem, initially.

Once it was though, I was hungering for a Sony real bad. No regrets either! Except now I want a second Sony, having found that I like having two readers.

I have a Sony PRS-600 and I love it, even when it goes into fibrillation once every few months. And I will be definitely be buying a new Sony soon.

The big advantage was when I started using calibre

calibre supports Sony like no other. I hesitate to say this, but without calibre support the Sony is not any more advanced than some other ereaders. I would download a library book, and it would look dreadful. Went into fibrillation for 3 days once and I was on a bus for the first 6 hours of that and setting up collections with Sony Software when it would condescend to work was tedious to say the least.

calibre developers have provided very good support for many other ereaders. When I bought my mother a kindle 3, developers who had no initial knowledge of the kindle 3 helped me get it set up for her. Now they have even more options and abilities for sorting on the kindle 3.

Don't give up on your particular device you have bought too soon. Quite often (not always) things get better.

My boox also works great with calibre and series. The way I have it set up is that each author has a folder. If there is a series calibre creates a subfolder within the author's folder with the series name. Inside the books are listed with the series number and title. Non series books are listed directly in the author's folder.

Also check into calibre2opds here on mobileread. I creates a catalogue of your calibre library in either opds or html format. Calibre + calibre2opds + dropbox + stanza = my favorite combination for reading on iphone.

I use a complex Calibre template that saves non- series book in a NoSeries Authors folder
and Series folders in folders by first letter of a Series name.

No searching by tags which might help locating a book .

I frequently make a Calibre Catalog (51M) and send it to the device to help

That is the big thing, if they want to offer a reader without a way to organize the books, they should only offer enough memory to hold a few books.

And then they could sell for an even lower price.
