Isn't that the formula used with the Kindle. I recall buying my first Kindle 1 and it was US only at the time. It wasn't until, if I remember right, the Kindle 2 International version that it was officially out internationally, yes? No?

So thanks for mentioning that Netflix is among the missing so far. I'll admit I am getting too old to keep chasing this dragon as implemented by these companies today. I'm a old hacker from the early Homebrew Club and just see things differently but are sort of tired of having to hack apart everything we spend our hard earned cash on while thinking we are actually buying it. I never thought I would reach this level of fatigue in IT or tech.
I hear ya; it's most frustrating the way content providers lock their stuff down on mobile devices and then dish it out in such a random fashion. I don't have this problem with my netbook; but my tablet gets denied all too often for my liking.

Are you talking about your Nook Color. Did you root it with the dual boot SD card or actually on the device?

CM7 on internal flash. The only thing B&N left on my Color is the Nook app.

Thanks. May be looking at a Nook Color or the new Amazon tablet. Would probably go the SD card if I did the NC. Any experience with the SD method.

I did the AutoNooter thing on the mSD card bit; but didn't see any advantage to having both, since I never used B&Ns features. In fact, I was at a disadvantage because I would have to put AutoNooter on every card I planned to use; as I swapped cards for different content. So I went with CM7 on internal flash and wiped B&N out. Besides, the root is easy to reverse if I should ever need warranty work; so I'm not concerned.

Keep your eye out for three quality 7" sub-$250 tablets to be available this holiday season:
  • Amazon Kindle Tablet - probably locked down, unknown rooting capability
  • B&N Nook Color - locked down, easy to root, and possibly 2nd Gen
  • Lenovo IdeaPad A1 - full Market access, no need to root
These tablets should all have iPad 1 specs or better; which is more than adequate for most users. That keeps costs down and still provides a quality experience.

I'm very happy with my rooted Nook Color, because it gives me all I require in a tablet and at a big savings in cost - quality display, plenty of power and speed, and access to two app stores (Google and Amazon). I may or may not upgrade, depending on features. If I do upgrade, I'm open to any of the three I listed above.

I want to check out the Amazon tablet when that comes out. Will have to check out the Lenovo. I like a 7" concept.

Which directions did you use to root your Nook. Can it be undone?

When you used the SD card did you do it yourself or buy one of the pre-made ones.

Ditto on both counts except I'm not even a Netflix subscriber yet. No way I'll get this if it doesn't support Netflix. But then, I have an iPad 1 and fully plan to upgrade to the iPad 3 if nothing better comes out.

I am looking at a few different tablets. The Nook Color, the new amazon, the Samsung Galaxy 7" and of course the iPad.
