Sorry about my links to outdated forum threads. I won't post those any more as they are not relevent, (hell I'm not relevant). I decided to make myself a nice wooden book holder and buy one of those cheap sheet magnifiers to mount in a holder in front of it. That will keep me reading fine print books for a while and the books I can't get except on a reader, well I will get over it... I just don't want to spend money on something like this when it's outdated by the time it hits the shelves and probably will go bad in a year or two, due to chinese manufacture. Too risky for my piddly minimum wage paycheck to waste on, especially when these economic times are so risky. It was a nice pipe dream and I almost went with it, but after looking everything over, it's not something I really need and really want doesn't work in these times. That's why I take so long to research, it gives my time to really see if I need it or just think I need it. It also gives me time to evaluate price vs quality/useage/longevity and these readers don't add up to being worth very much (to me). Amazon should give one out free for everyone who wants to sign a two year contract, just like cell phones. Thanks for all your answers, they (along with many other threads here) helped me to see what I really need to do. |

Incidentally, the font re-sizing and bold text of e-ink readers is absolutely wonderful for those of us who like larger text. So much nicer than paperbacks, and even most hardcovers. Last edited by OtterBooks; 09-07-2011 at 03:00 AM. |

My Last Post here...
You know I had a funny private message here, from a moderator, about editing a post of mine and it really just reaffirms the trouble someone can get into by tampering with DRM. A link I had posted, discussing the problems with DRM removal was removed and I'm sure it is to help keep the mobileread forum site from being shut down, because if anyone actually discusses how to remove DRM, the site could be closed... If the people who run this site are so worried about being closed down for DRM references, why are people here recommend newbies to go ahead and practice illegal methods which could result in prosecution? I think that is wrong. I'm outta here... |

1) It is not illegal every where. There are countries were it is legal so those folks should be able to know that it is possible and get some hints as to where to go to remove DRM if they want.
2) There is real confusion on if it is is illegal in the US or not. Fair use law might allow the removal of DRM. There are some folks who think that what is illegal is creating the tools to remove DRM and not using them. There are those who think that it is legal to create and distribute the tools. There is no case law that anyone can point to that shows that DRM removal is actually illegal in the US. The best people can do is point to the folks who were busted for music piracy and even then they were busted for pirating music. I don't think that they were busted for DRM removal. 3) There are folks who feel that it is worth the risk so that they can protect their books. Mostly, they figure that if it is illegal that the Publishers are going to focus on the people who pirate ebooks and not people who are removing DRM for their own use. Just because you know something is available does not mean that you have to do it. The people who discuss removing DRM tend to also discuss the potential risks. They are letting you know of one possible option. They are not telling you to do it or forcing you to do it. Most boards don't let you discuss how to remove DRM or where to get the tools and the like because there is concern that they could be in violation of the law and so they cover their butts by not allowing explicit conversations. |

No one is getting prosecuted for liberating ebooks they have legitimately acquired. It's the sharing of those ebooks that can get a person into trouble.

Besides agreeing to the two answers you already got, I only want to add that you titled this thread "Just another guy looking for experienced help".
That's what you got. |
