You can go back to 1.7.0 if you want to use collections. I had the same problem.

@DiapDealer, With 1.7.1 it doesn't matter how many you have downloaded. I had 10 and 900+ archived. 1.7.1 checked every archived book till it crashes. 1.7.0 doesn't have this problem.

Gotcha. I've only got about 111 items in my archive, and haven't run into any of those issues yet. But I freely admit that XP is the last version of Windows whose existence I acknowledge.

Ah good ole XP! I have Vista 64 and I can say for me has been more stable then XP and all those Blue screens of deaths it gave me. I don't miss them! I do have XP on my netbook though and old PC that I don't use anymore.

The Archive check in K4PC is only in 1.7.1. and hopefully the next version will fix it because it has PDF support.

after a decade of exclusively using redhat/mandrake/mandriva linux i've found win 7 home to be just as stable and less hassle.

I'm also happy with Win 7. I have Vista on another machine and I'd take Win 7 over Vista. I had good luck with XP too.

I guess I just don't understand keeping 500-1000 ebooks in Kindle for PC's local folder unless you use your PC to do all of your reading on.

Enlighten me.

Even if it's simply; "I just like having them all there to look at."
I'm confused. I am running 1.7.0 and just tried to open a book in K4PC that I downloaded in an earlier version. It opened fine. Are you saying that K4PC latest version shouldn't be able to open books downloaded from an earlier version?

Not at all. I'm saying that the local file is only good for that installation of K4PC (you can't install K4PC on another machine and just copy the file over). That part's pretty easy to grasp.

But also, the DRM on the ebooks is tied to your hard-drive's volume serial number. So even if you had external backups of those files, if your harddrive died and you installed a new one and reinstalled K4PC... you wouldn't be able to copy the external backup to the "My Kindle Content" folder and be able to read it—even on the same computer.

Basically, I'm saying that keeping local (or external) copies of DRM'ed azw files for backup purposes is fairly pointless. When something goes wrong, you're going to have to download a new copy from your Amazon archive anyway.

Note: I'm talking about backup purposes only, here. If a user just likes having copies of everything in their Amazon Archive in their "My Kindle Content" folder, well... more power to 'em.

That part I knew.

This part I guess I sort of knew but never put 2 & 2 together to realize that a backup copy wouldn't work. Thanks for enlightening me.

I understand now. I do 'Liberate' all my ebooks immediately and keep a backup of those ebooks. Thanks for the explanation. Karma to you.

Thats why I like the filehippo.com updater... it scans your system and displays potential updates. It has plenty of options such as not displaying beta updates and choosing which browser you want to use. I like it because as soon as the publisher/programmer releases their update, it shows in the "updater". I don't use the K4PC often but i still like to keep it up to date for when I do use it.

How do I read a PDF document in Kindle for PC 1.71? I have installed 1.71. But the File -> Open Book menu element is always grayed out. If I drag-and-drop a PDF file onto the open Kindle for PC software nothing happens.

Help?

add the pdf to the kindle book folder \My Documents\My Kindle Content, or I imagine you could right click the pdf and then select "Open With" and tell kindle for pc to open the pdf.

Ron, thanks for your quick reply.

Sadly...

Neither of the above-mentioned techniques worked for me. I copied a PDF file into the "My Kindle Content" folder and opened K4PC, but I don't see the PDF file. What should I expect to see and where should I expect to see it?

File Explorer does not offer K4PC as an option to open a PDF file, only Adobe Reader. Do I have to manually tell File Explorer to use K4PC as a second possible binding? (I'm trying to figure out where the installer put the K4PC executable.)

Addendum: I got it working! I went into File Explorer and right-clicked on a PDF file. Then I went to "Open with" and then into the dialog that let me set an alternative PDF reader program. I set the Kindle (I should have been saying "Kindle" instead of the obsolete "Kindle for PC") software and opened the book. The Kindle software opened on my PC and displayed the book. The PDF book is now shown in my Kindle (software) Library under "Downloaded Items". Huzzah!!!

Thank you!

Oooh, you're right. I hadn't noticed the name change before you said something.

But there will still be a need for people to distinguish between the different platforms--PC, Mac, iP(ad|od|hone), Android, Blackberry--when discussing issues (here or with customer support and the like), so I think the old naming scheme will probably hang around for quite a while.

Huh?

Oh, uh... Mac.
