I saw this note half an hour after I returned my 12 hour old Kobo to the store. I am not sure I would have kept it had I seen the message but I would have delayed my final decision.

In the few hours I had the device I suffered two factory resets necessitating a complete reload of my books and preferences. Intolerable performance.

My first action was to search on line for a solution and I discovered in this forum that the fault has been in existence for weeks. But what was much much more worrying for me was the utter lack of response I was seeing from Kobo acknowledging the problem.

That lack of communication from Kobo anywhere that I looked on the internet was what killed the device for me. I just was not going to fight with technology unsuppported by its maker.

But there were two other aspects of the Kobo that probably would have prompted an eventual return.
  • The lack of book categories/collections/tags
  • The inability to search within books (inexplicable absence)
  • The lack of multiple bookmarks and annotations

I have 4 other ereaders as well as software for old handheld computers (Psion) that go back to the early 90's and all have categories, search, and bookmarks.

I could have lived without those on the Kobo since I bought it only as a walking around and travel reader with the idea of having no more than half a dozen novels on it at a time except for the dreadful factory reset business and the concomitant lack of communication from the company.

Pity. It felt good in the hand and the screen was nice.

No doubt Sony was first with a touch screen (and first with an eInk screen ereader for that matter). I mean their direction in the physical form factor and features vs. price. They are slimming it down to minimum bezel on 3 sides, emphasizing small size and light weight, getting rid of unnecessary buttons. Of the more recent competitive models KT and NST, I think they chose to follow more closely the KT form factor. And it looks like they chose to follow both those models in the direction of lower price instead of new features.

This "me too, but still a bit more expensive" strategy doesn't look like a winning strategy for Sony. I expected them to go for more innovation.

As it's already been said, the new Sony apes the design of the 650, not KT. This was something Sony already did a year before KT did. The only change now is Sony is giving up the metal body for less weight/lower cost. (But that's just a positive spin on 'cheaper constructoin', which was probably necessary for Sony to drop the price)

I can't speak for their eReaders but I wish that was true across the board. Down through the years I've had issues with the PS3, the PSP, several DVD/Blu-ray players and a $75k digital broadcast VTR. In my personal experience Sony peaked nearly 20 years ago, particularly in the consumer market.

The following video, while targeting Sony in particular, nicely sums up the consumer's love/hate relationship with new technology. Be warned, very strong language and definitely NSFW.

That is a very clever clip! And so true (not just Sony though...). If it wasn't for the strong language I'd love to show it to my 11 year old who always wants the latest and greatest.

Hi all, just wanted to make clear that 1.9.10 fixes the storage error, it is being rolled out now and the rollout should be complete tomorrow.

The Sony's have had a couple of major bugs and design flaws. The biggest was probably the inwbility to have both pub and PDF library books on the device at the same time. Another was the notorious synch error with the desktop. The sony android app is also far buggier than the Kobo app.

The update came out too late for me. I tried updating this morning and the update wasn't available to me yet. Then this afternoon I got the error for the first time. What a pain in the a$$. Lost my progress in my book and now I'll have to reload all the books (about 300) that I had on my Kobo. I hope the update fixes this issue because I've only dealt with it once and it's infuriating.

Ted that clip is just brilliant. Like Pippa I wish there was a slightly less offensive version I could share around a bit more.

Jeff as the fix is almost here I suggest you just load 2 or 3 books that you are currently reading onto your Kobo to save time. Tomorrow after you get the update you can add the rest of your library.

Snap, just happened to me too. And at the end of the reset and update I was still on 1.9.9 - so I've now loaded a single book and hopefully tomorrow the update will come through.
