because most of the jets manufactured and delivered are older than the windows computing the majority of the jets in the air right now were made between 1988-1995 with a few minor updates in newer variations wich usually only had 10-20 jets ever delivered.

think about it the backbone of our airlines were designed in the 60's and 70's with the 737 designed in 1965 the 747 designed in 1963, the 767 designed in 1970, the 777 was designed in 1988 basicly our airfleet was all designed before the windows pc. thats why there arent Pc's in there

I dont think people realize how old the fleet of jets are in the united states, the good news is boeing got certified for its boeing 787 dreamliner wich after many delays and 6 years behind on its 827 orders will be starting delivery in japan this month and looks to replace both the aging 747 and 767 fleets

I realize they're old, but it doesn't take rocket science to retrofit a small PC.

But it might cost more than $499

This ignores that avionics are updated constantly. Just because an airframe was designedin 1965, doesn't mean that the electronics inside are from 1965. Hell, the engines aren't even from 1965. It's very common for the overall weight of an aircraft to increase over it's lifetime as equipment and capabilities get upgraded, necessitating an engine retrofit in some cases.

Can you suggest a small PC which has a guaranteed 10-20 years supported lifetime (i.e. you would be able to get spare parts in 10-20 years, and would still be compatible with whatever commercially supported software will be out there in that time) and has no electromagnetic radiation whatsoever?

I think the point is that it's easily replaceable...even with another make and model.

You know, a $250 netbook could easily store and read the same documents.

Any non-builtin device is by definition constantly upgraded whenever taken out of the cockpit and another or the same one with the same purpose is brought in again.

Continuous upgrades with no downtime and retesting for replacing built-in devices.

:-)

Sure you could. But did you note the features about the iPad they thought were important for this specific use? Maybe an extra $249 wasn't that big a deal for reliability, instant on/fast restart, and a ready made app designed specifically for the device.

whoops sorry, I read a lot of articles about it the last couple days:
Quote:
“What makes the iPad more attractive, in comparison to its competitors, is that it is extremely stable and is less likely to experience a system crash. Even if that did occur, the reboot time is one of the fastest in the tablet market,” said Resolve Market Research analyst Kari Cafouros.
Plus, unlike a netbook, you don't need a desk to use it :P
